New taotao 150d cvt question
Sorry I tried searching but didn't see anything. Any the engine seems to rev really high before the cvt engages. My Polaris engages just over 1000rpm. The Tao Tao seems like it has to rev to almost 3k before it starts to take off. When I first took off on it I thought I was still in neutral because it wasn't going anywhere until I really gave it some gas.
Is this normal or should I tak it apart? Also how do you check the gear oil in the transmission? I'm only finding a drain plug. Thanks |
Welcome! Love your screen name. :D
Katoranger has more CVT experience than I do, but I'll start the process. Is this a new ATV or a used one? If used, do you have any history on it? Any idea about how many hours are on it? Have you pulled the CVT cover off for inspection? The drain plug for the gear oil is at the rear of the CVT, and the fill plug is right above it. I use Castrol Syntech 75W90. |
It's brand new, I wasn't going to tear it apart if it was normal.

Is there any warranty coverage on it?
If not, you can tune the CVT to suit your needs. The clutch and CVT can be modified for cheap, including different roller weight and clutch engagement spring strength. All it will cost you is a gasket to remove the cover and inspect it. |
I'm Just wondering how high these things are supposed to rev before they take off?
|
Mine can take off at quite a low rev. I can crawl off of the line with it as necessary.
|
There must be something wrong with mine then
|
I took the cover off and it seems to me like the springs for the centrifugal clutch are too strong. The Cover for the cent. Clutch does seem pretty groovy for only driving 30 minutes. I'm Going to try to resurface that and the pads a little bit and put a shim in the front sheaves to get the belt down a little farther and see if that helps.

Lighter springs are cheap on eBay.
|
You're right, after like 5min of research I found a bunch of different springs. Thanks for your help.
I Should probably order some jets and air filter while I'm at it. |
May we see a pic of what you're working on?

I Didn't take any of the cvt taken apart

Cool quad!
Is that an RC Hummer on the shelf? |
I think the buggy engages pretty low too. Try some lighter springs and upgrade the rollers to sliders. It will make it a whole new machine.
I have pictures in my buggy thread. |
I have yellow springs and 10 gram sliders. It rips around pretty good with two people. Much heavier than a quad too.
