However, the SPOT device costs $150, and you also need to pay a $150 service fee every year. :tdown:

After doing some research, I have instead decided to purchase a personal locator beacon (PLB). These devices are far more reliable, and cost less than the SPOT device. :tup: The ACR ResQLink PLB costs about $240, and doesn't have any service plan fees. :) The PLB battery lasts 6 years before it needs to be replaced, so the total cost is about $40/year.

If you have a true emergency in the wilderness, the PLB is much more effective, and costs much less than a SPOT device. ;)

I have a wally world GPS (Garmin) that worked well enough to and from Kansas on my New yrs trip (in my Insight:). May try it on the bike.
Ram mount has almost universal recommendation. Best supplier?

Agree re delivery, warmer the better until May for AZ. Texas can be iffy, and I saw snow in the Phoenix/Toombstone areas flying out one yr in April! (in an ultralight:)!

An older friend of mine landed his PPC out in the Nevada desert to take a leak but hit a rock and broke his leg when it slipped off the steering bar. There he is in the middle of nowhere, all alone, with a badly broken leg, unable to take off and fly back to camp. Fortunately he had recently purchased a Spot and was rescued by the sheriff a few hours later. Back at camp his wife got the message but didn't know how to use the GPS to find him.

I've been thinking about getting one because there is no cell service where I often ride in Central Oregon and you're not likely to see another person for days or weeks. Flying out there carries the same risk.

I'm in complete agreement, although I heartily recommend the buddy system.

I use the Delorme InReach. Worldwide service plus two way texting. Off hand can't remember my monthly service charge, but it's not too $$$.

Also, you aren't locked into a yearly service plan, as with the SPOT devices. ;) You can select a monthly service fee, and pay only when you need it. :tup:
