CG250 with reverse

I'm interested in using a CG250 engine with reverse on an ATV project. I noticed that reverse is typically where 1st gear would be (R-N-1-2-3-4). Would it be possible to accidently go into reverse while moving forward? Are there any disadvantages to using this engine over the 5 spd dirt bike engine?

Yes you can hit reverse while moving foreward ,scary on a dirt bike ,that’s all the disadvantage you need to know if you are putting it in a dirt bike .They are usually electric start only.I put one in an xr200 frame,no good so swapped it out for a bike engine

Unlike a normal motorcycle engine where you can shift past neutral, in an ATV engine it takes 2 clicks of the gear lever to get from 1st to reverse or reverse to first.

One click after 4th with the common circular shift pattern and you are in reverse hell .

Are you saying you can shift past 4th gear and end up in reverse?

Yes if you have the circular shift pattern .

I've never heard of a CG engine with reverse that also has a circular shift pattern. It wouldn't make sense.

I have had 4-5 come through my shop ,all the same make and model ,I don’t do much Chinese atv work and I no longer work on those particular machines as they are garbage by the time I see them .I agree ,they do not make sense ,actually any circular shift pattern bike are a dumb idea as well ,but they are out there unfortunately .

I own a 2018 Taotao Rhino with a CG engine that is approaching 3000 hours with zero engine issues. It has only had oil changes and valve adjustments and a new spark plug. I used to have a Taotao ATA250d that I bought used that also had zero engine issues. Very reliable engines. Both have reverse gear.

I think I will get one for my project. I can live with the shift pattern. I was just concerned that you could hit reverse accidently but I don’t think it will be a problem. Thanks for the help.

Many years ago, my wife had a Bridgestone 175 Hurricane Scrambler, that had a dual shift pattern, it was either conventional, or rotary, depending upon which you selected.

The pics are not of her bike, it was a bike that was sold at auction last November.
