heinous crime committed to RX3

I think I committed sacrilege to my RX3 by drilling the windscreen to mount my 7" GPS. I've always like the Dakar style office up front. With my aging eyes if it ain't in front of my nose , I can't see it. Time will tell if it stays put or cracks wind screen. Since my field of vision is way above the wind screen ,the GPS is down below my chin height. Plus all the dash is still visible. Tried mounting on the handle bar but it was always in the way and not a good angle to view at speed. sorry RX3, rj

Your modification is creative and functional; I like it. :)

I think the windshield is less likely to crack if you put some rubber grommets in the two holes, then pass the attachment bolts though washers which rest upon the grommets. ;)

I agree. I was thinking of a sheet of rubber between the mount and the screen, but grommets are likely smarter. I think we just named your bike. Gromit. :D

I like the GPS, and I've considered mounting my 7" tablet computer in my truck for the same purpose. My eyes ain't what they used to be.

Good idea on the rubber grommets guys. I kinda just put it together tonight at work to see how it would work and didn't think it through to far. I'll see what I can find for rubber cushioning and add them. Also thinking about a third hole in screen to hold a prop leg between screen and GPS to support the GPS on the lower back side so it won't tilt down when going over rough stuff. Thanks for the great ideas, rj

PS , looking back at the last picture I see I did add a thick squishy rubber washer that is a cutoff from a handle bar grip. You can see the "O" between the 2 mounting screws on the wind screen. I agree grommets would better protect the wind screen around the mounting screw holes also.

The last time I checked, you could purchase rubber grommets in a variety of sizes at Ace Hardware. I'm hoping the rubber grommets will stop the holes from cracking, and sending hairline fractures through the windshield. ;)

Don't know if this will have any affect on the windscreen but like drilling fiberglass a slight beveled edge on the hole prevents spider cracking. You would need to put a bevel on the inside and outside of your holes.

On Plexiglass apply heat to smooth out rough edges. If the appearance is milky white it is quite rough. Change to more translucent and there will be a lot less chance for cracking.

I am resurrecting this ancient thread because I'm considering the same, but just to mount an iPhone XS. I'd like the GPS up high and in my view (and I just use the phone for GPS, it's waterproof, nothing to fear). So I wonder if the OP is still around and can report back on long term usability, and issues, etc? Does it vibrate?

I can't speak for the OP, but I have a similar setup, drilled straight trough the windscreen (although is not the original Zongshen one), I have thousands of Km with these, many of them on gravel bumpy roads, with no issues so far.

Thanks! What windscreen are you using, do you like it better, recommend it? I've just ordered the Proclip iPhone dock, but not the mounting stuff for it. A RAM mount right into the windscreen or its mounts could put it just where I want it.

This is a windscreen made and sold here in Argentina.
Perhaps you can contact them and see if they will ship it?

It's taller than the stock, clear one. They offer two versions (41cm & 49cm).
I also have the stock short, black one wich I put when doing lots of nearby trials.
The taller one is great for extended trips, but depending on your height and preference you could be fine with the stock.

Regards.

Still around calvarez and I never had any problem with the screen mounted GPS in 16,500 miles. I currently don't have it mounted because I needed it on another bike on another trip but it's still the original wind screen. rj
