Vermont Loophole Closed

Figured I'd post this here since it popped up in my feed today.

As first reported by The Autopian, the Vermont DMV closed this loophole on July 1st. Now if someone out-of-state wants to register a car in Vermont, they'll have to go to a DMV in their state and have an official fill out a form certifying that the state in question doesn't require a car to be registered there. Additionally, the Vermont DMV now says that it "will not process this/these transaction(s) unless or until the owner of the subject vehicle can establish a legitimate connection to the state of Vermont." In short, the fun's over.

I wonder how stringent the VIN verification was for Vermont. Did you have to apply for a Vermont title to register a car?

Missouri requires inspection by State Police for VIN and odometer verification. I believe it's largely to ferret out stolen engines and chop shop cars. I bought a car from the impound lot that had been owned and properly titled/plated in Missouri and I still had to have the inspection.

I had replaced the control arms, struts, and a couple other front suspension parts, and they wanted receipts! But the engine had the matching VIN and it passed.

Curious as to 'renewals'.

South Dakota is still a viable solution. :)

I went the Vermont route a couple of times many years ago.
First time was with my 1974 Honda MT125, second was with my 1979 Honda XR500.
In both cases the VIN verification was covered by a Missouri safety inspection coupled with a signature by a local LEO stating that they'd run the VIN through their system and it hadn't been reported as stolen.

Renewal was a simple online process.

All obsolete information at this point unfortunately, it was a great option for myself and a number of buddies who were rebuilding barn-find bikes at the time.

Will have to look into the South Dakota option
