It's a combination of km and the front wheel...
It's a combination of km and the front wheel diameter. Mine has a 1.42 error - i.e. it reads 1.42x higher than actual mileage. I have no idea how consistent that would be across years and odometers....

I think the best reason is just for peace of mind. It's cheap and easy to do. Bigger problem with mine was there wasn't much in there, about half the quantity of what I ended up filling it up with.
