Valvoline makes an ATV oil for a reason. Quad service is generally way more severe than motorcycle service. You were using the wrong oil for the job. Not surprised you had a problem.

Those spade connectors will short to anything metal they touch. Use the 2 wire plugs that come with battery tenders and splice the wires with solder and shrink tubing instead of crimps.

If you want a flat finish that is tougher than most and super easy to touch up get some John Deere flat black. It isn't cheap, but it is a much better product than other matte or flat paints.
