I figured this out. I'm going to look in some old Clymer manual next time I'm at the Library just to make sure. I just backed off the adjustment until there was a point where the clutch lever seemed to have things fully engaged (hard to describe). Then tightened it a bit from there. Then adjusted at the lever. Things don't seem as difficult to shift.
