I broke the 'Good Idea Cut-Off Point" rule...Don't make any mods to the bike just prior to a trip. Tomorrow I launch for a short trip to the HU meeting in Virginia. Today I mounted a GPS. What could possibly go wrong...
Lots of folks like RAM mounts, I hate them. Thus I'm stuck making my own. I start out with some scrap aluminum and fab up some 10mm spacers:

These allow me to mount a plate above the handlebar mount:
Then I need a bracket for the GPS. I have had terrible luck in guessing the exact angle to mount the GPS so I can read it under way so this time I'm making it adjustable for angle.

I also mount anti-vibration pads (3mmX15 from
www.quadrocopter.com) because I have had problems with high frequency vibration killing the electrical contacts between the mount and the GPS.

with it all bolted up there is still room for the ignition key.
