I'm probably going to go across the back with a receiver style hitch, mostly because the likely candidate to be hauled anywhere is one of my British 3 speeds, which, with a generator hub, are a PITA to remove and install front wheels on.

You probably know this but I recommend going with a rack that has elongated 'loops' to hold the wheels and an inverted 'U' shaped padded bar to hold down the top tube. This will keep the bike from swinging on a 'hang and bang' type rack. Nashbar has a good one pretty inexpensive.
