It did originally (and still does) have the overhead cam engine. If I remember correctly, some time in the 1970’s Honda’s engineering department sat down and sketched out a pushrod engine specifically to be used in 3rd world countries where maintenance was going to be an issue. So, evidently the pushrod engines, at least after Honda became successful, are a retro design and came after the ohc engines with the timing chain and etc.
