If longevity is what you are looking for I would agree with China Rider 27. K&N offers better-than-stock airflow, but not superior filtration according to the tests I've read. I run a K&N cone on mine and it helped it breathe a bit up here at 7300 feet, but the elevation is the only reason I went that route.
Otherwise you have a sound plan. The KPM isn't the best highway machine, but it'll slay the back roads if you don't mind the extra time in the saddle.
I'd love to see how many miles you can wring out of that little motor. I'll be cheering you on!
