CCW, looking from the left side; i.e. the direction the motor normally turns. Pull the spark plug so there is no compression. Otherwise you might accidentally loosen the crank nut that you are turning the motor with.

Also, you may find it is impossible to get it to stay exactly where you want it, which is at the proper TDC (both valves closed). You get almost there, then the motor spins past TDC by itself. You have to turn the motor with a solid wrench, not with something that has a ratchet.
