These engines do not have a paper filter because really it isn't necessary. Think about it... we change the oil (a whole quart!) every 1000 miles or less! This is a cheap engine to maintain.
More importantly, if you DO add an oil cooler, you had better make sure that there is oil, not air at the inlet of the pump. If the inlet experiences air, there is NO OIL PRESSURE. This is much more dangerous than having no filter!
Adding an oil cooler is a great thing if your engine is overheating in your environment (heavy high performance use or high temperatures where you live). But make sure you have a full oil cooler and lines
