BTDT, my 'event' was with a G650GS on the TAT. I did not break a leg but it hurt like hell for a few weeks. Thank goodness for the Combat Touring boots. Like you, I'm ready to down size and actually enjoy going off road a bit on something that won't have me in constant fear of the bike taking a nap. 250 sounds just right to me.
