If you didn't measure the amount of oil, that's the problem. You didn't add enough oil to the engine. If you fill the oil to the proper level in the sight glass, then start the engine, the oil will be distributed to the nooks and crannies of the engine. Also, if you install a new oil filter, some of the oil will be distributed to that area. Therefore, you need to fill the oil to the appropriate level in the sight glass once again, run the engine, and keep doing so until the oil returns to the proper level in the sight glass within a few minutes of stopping the engine.

I simplify the process by measuring 1.7 quarts (55 ounces) of oil to add to the engine. Using this method, I know I have the correct quantity of oil. Of course, I verify the oil level is correct after running the engine, and checking the oil level in the sight glass.
