You really need a piston designed for the engine that you have. Honestly, you could get a little more with a high compression piston (though you could also just deck the head, too, but you're better off getting the key that 2LZ mentioned, you could get a cam like Megadan, and you could port/get the head ported.
Pistons theoretically don't need to have the same stroke to work, but there are other variables, like wristpin diameter, compression height, height above the wrist pin, combustion chamber/dome shape. All of those factors mean you can't just buy any old piston.
