The RX-3 is well suited to dirt roads and mild off-road trails. Don't know if you a were doing it but standing up on the pegs gives you way more control and maneuverability off road. If you don't have one already, the 13T counter sprocket really helps with low end grunt and slower speeds needed on dirt.
