The design is quite close to the old XR200, but the frame of architecture is a little different. The engine you're working with can accept a larger bore cylinder, due to wider stud spacing. I haven't taken the time to compare cams, but I wouldn't be surprised to learn that a hot XR cam might wake up your motor. Maybe Webcams would be a good source.
You could also play with midrange settings on your carb. Have you tried shimming the needle, or only moving the clip?
