Excessive rattling from top end?

I'm pretty certain it's not my valves. Man this is a noisy engine! Any thoughts fellas?

It is a chinese bike for under 2k. Is not going to be nice and smooth. Even my yamaha and suzuki make some noise.

But if something sounds broken it very well might be.

Also... are you sure you did the valves correctly? I messed up the first time I ever did valves. I ended up being a few tbousandths off and it sounded awful.

Yeah, I've made sure the valves weren't the issue. I've watched many videos of Hawk DLX and never heard any rattling that compares with mine. Not sure anything is broken, hoping there's just an adjustment I can make somewhere.

It's a low tolerance air cooled engine with a solid tappet pushrod valvetrain. Welcome to noise.

Bud, if you say not to worry then I'm sure as hell not going to worry! You are clearly a 'go to' guy! Thank you gentlemen.

For better reassurance, post a video. That way we can all offer an opinion, and possibly peace of mind.

Guys, a thought here, are you adjusting your valves cold? If not then the rattle is do to being loose when cold. I have seen you tube videos that show people running the bike prior to adjustment and I believe that's incorrect! My just received two days ago hawk dlx efi bike says valve lash is 0.05'-0.07mm. Correct me if I'm wrong but the . is in the wrong spot? Again maybe .005 would be more like it and the rattle does come from loose valves.

I have them both at .002 and the bike was cold when I adjusted it. Also, I checked them again today. I have tried all different gap sizes, with a cold bike, and the incessant rattling continues.

You are wrong. The setting is .05mm to .07mm, aka .002inch to .003inch. That is exactly where I set mine at .06mm aka .0025inch.

These motors are just clattery. It's the nature of the beast. Old school tech.

I do agree on the people running their motors first doing it wrong. The engine should be dead cold. Let to sit for several hours, even overnight, cold. Set it warm and the gap will be too big.

Well I'm more much relieved knowing you have heard the sound and still don't see anything working incorrectly.

I just listened to it. That does not sound right. Are you 100% certain you set the valves on the compression stroke? Sounds like they were set on the exhaust stroke to me, which means the gap is too wide.

Now I'm not! I only started her for about 5 minutes earlier, not sure if I should wait until tomorrow to check.
