they do stretch a bit and they definatly are a cheaper chain no o-rings here. Alot of people on this forum have upgraded to a 520 chain(see chain conversion sticky) I have 1500 kilometers on mine with no problems yet. I think when it fails I'll just go to a heavy duty chain of the same size.

I remove the stock chain after about 100 miles and install a cheap bikemaster chain with the new 45T sprocket. It has over 4000 miles and is getting worn.

Well for me, a little off-road riding with a small rear sprocket (42) did stretch out my chain very quickly, but it's still holding out after about 500 miles later. I did have a chain pop off while driving in the rain though. So keep an eye on it.

I'd say about 8k miles before you need to change it because it has stretched to much. That's about what Dad and I got out of our stock chains. We also replaced them with a very similar 428"h" chain from JC Whitney for $11.99(see parts thread). No problems so far.

At 4000Km, I've just changed mine. I found it had stretched out to 3 links longer.

The majority of the cut-rate, Ebay bikes come stock with a 56. However, after Lifan's GY-5 model came stock with a 44, it seemed that several manufacturers have gone this direction. I asked VBikeusa which sprocket the Hi-Bird 250 came with, and the guy wrote back that they are 46--I think essentially the same bike as your avatar, the Hi-Bird manufactured Komoto GY250, has the same 46 sprocket, but Komoto has not responded, nor has amancycle who sell both the Komoto and Hi-Bird 250.

4 of us local guys got together and bought some bulk chain from Ebay. For $60 including shipping we got a total of 8 chains with masterlinks and extra links. I forget what brand the chain is but quality is similar to the OEM chain.

Culcune, I don't recall any GY-5's coming stock with a 44t sprocket, the 06 and 07's both came with a 46t...

Can the chain be adjusted with the bike on its kickstand or do you have to have the whole rear of the bike off the ground?

Adjust it on the kickstand and leave 1 inch of play on the chain so that when you go over a bump the suspension compresses, the chain has enough slack to allow for the extra length requirement.

Adjusted it on the kickstand today. I used the sticker on the side of the bike as a guide to how much play I left in it. I was however careful not to make it too tight. Overall the bike feels better now.
