New Problem Headlight and tail light keep blowing.
This is on my 2008 Lifan trail 70 Replica.
I had a 140cc on it for a bit but put the 110cc back in it. There was only a few wires changed for the 140cc install and I left it so I could swap everything back. It is a dc style stator. After I swapped the 110cc back in and put all the wiring back in place I fired it back up. Not soon after I threw the lights on I noticed the rectifier was smoking. I shut it off and checked all the wiring again and again and put a spare rectifier in it and fired it back up. I revved it up a few times and the headlight and tail light blew at the same time. The Only thing I changed with the swap back was putting a new Stock coil and new stock 4 pin cdi in it. I did notice that I forgot to tighten the coil down to the frame. Could the coil not being grounded the reason for smoking the rectifier and the lights? Any other Ideas? |

this is just a guess but it sounds like the stator output may be to high for the electrics you have in place. the new engine may have a lot higher output than the old one. if you could find the specs and check it with a meter that would be a good place to start.

It sounds like you are overcharging. How is the battery electrolyte level?

This engine is the orignal engine that was taken out and now has been put back in. The stock wiring is exactly like it was when it left the factory save for a new 4 pin cdi.

I wonder if the rectifier was bad and that may have been why you were not charging with the other engine. Obviously is now.

The recitfier for the 140cc is differant from the 110cc full wave recitifer.
I made sure I had the one for the 110cc in there The cdi was fried as well. The 140cc always had a issue of not charging the battery up fast enough. After a bit at the scooter shop it was going again. The 110cc rectifier shot craps About 20 minutes into the ride and let the stator send over 30 volts to everything. So CDI, Rectifier 2 headlight bulbs and 2 tail light bulbs later.. its running. Oh and it fried the battery as well. Good Times! |

Well, at least you got it running again. Too bad it took so many parts at once.
Any idea what the problem with the 140 was? How was the performance over the 110? |

The 140 was badass..... period.
The 140 just isn't set up to run lights and charge at the same time. The madass guys can do it but they run a different wiring set up. The 110cc will get a hi comp 114 kit in it pretty soon. |

140/110-
everyone is forgetting, he admits to having a bad ground, some of the nasty electrical problems turn out to be something as simple as this.

The Harness is grounded TWICE with pretty heavy ground strap.
As far as the coil, The Local scooter shop didnt think this was the issue and neither did my spare headlight and tail light when I put them in and they popped after it was bolted down. The Spare rec was probably not a full wave type thats why it went but it didnt do a full blown meltdown like the factory 110cc rec. Luckly they had a spare rec and all the other parts I needed to get the bike going again. |

Too bad the 140 wont run the lights. Would the charging components off a 110 work on the 140 or is it a different type of motor?
Allways toyed with the idea of having a "Trail 70" with some grunt power. |

The cases are different. If I Did not need the lights it would have been fine.
The 110 is easy enough to build up and I should have went that route anyway. |

fantastic, that th parts were readily available., sorry about the ground post just stating an often overlooked problem, for instance i had a allis chalmers lawn tractor that would start bucking and spitting and shut off after it got warm i replaced every electrical and fuel system part I could ,finally took it to the old time lawn mower guru, He had it fixed in 1/2 hour ,He put a new battery in it!And this tractor started everytime all the time.He said it had a bad cell ,go figure

I'm glad you got the problem fixed, Dsrt4. If you have time, please do post some photos; I would love to the bike!

I will get some pics of it tomarrow for sure.
A vendor on a pit bike forum has a bastard 140cc e-start and he wants pics of the 110cc to check the stator side to see if it will work in my application. So Im under the gun to get pics for him as well. Maybe I can get a 140cc back into this beast!! |
