SYX Moto Holeshot 50cc pitbike arrived today

Got the SYX Moto Holeshot 50cc pitbike delivered and assembled today. There were a few snags but nothing major. Had to bend the mounting tabs for the chain guard because it was hitting the tire. Had to bend the kickstand with a torch because it held the bike straight up and down. And had to tweak the fork alignment a little from shipping. We also pulled the tranny to make sure it had plenty of grease, which it did. And disassembled the centrifugal clutch to loctite the 3 bolts. And we removed and loctite-d several other fasteners. The real pain in the ass was the graphics. Had to look at pictures online to figure out what went where and make sure they were aligned with no air bubbles and trim a little with a razor knife. It fired right up and only needed an idle screw adjustment. Put it through 4 heat cycles and then took it to the ballpark for the boy to ride. So far I'm definitely impressed, a nice little bike for $350 (including shipping and tax).

Day 1, first ride

Little man Cash is learning. The problem is every time he starts giving it gas he wants to look down at the bike instead of where he's going. And he's not used to the throttle yet, if he gets scared he gives it even more, which made for some interesting crashes lol. But thanks to the body armor he was fine. Albeit one time I think he got the wind knocked out of him because he was a little slow getting up. But he'll figure it out. 🙂

Day 2, 2nd and 3rd ride

Welp it's official, lil man Cash (6yrs old) is now a motorcycle rider! Jay took him for a practice session and he was learning to balance with his feet on the pegs but was still looking at the bike. This led to him running into a dumpster at about 15mph, and even with the helmet on it rung his bell. Told his dad he was done, didn't want anything to do with bikes etc. A couple of hours later Jay told Cash it was time to practice again and the boy didn't want to so I asked him if he would ride with me and put my gear on (which I normally don't for the big utility quad) and that was all it took. We went back to the ballpark and Cash started RIDING. Looking where he was going, practicing stopping and starting, throttle control, low speed balance, maneuvering around obstacles, crossing a ditch, high speed passes, and getting better by the minute and not dumping it. By the end of the day he was showing off his skills and didn't wanna go home even though it was getting dark. He's a rider now! 😊

Cash is getting better, we just gotta remind him constantly to use the brakes, he doesn't see a purpose for using them and prefers to stop it with his feet, which doesn't always work out well lol. But it took running into a dumpster to teach him he needs to look where he's going, so he'll probably have to run into something else to convince him he needs to use the brakes.

Oh, and the bike normally starts first pull every time, but Jay had been playing with the idle screw and turned it too far down.

Yesterday we took Cash up to a big open hayfield for a few hours. I have to say, he was using the front brake every time he stopped and not his feet. And he only dumped it once the entire day and that was because the chain came off and locked up the back wheel.

Since he was riding so well we decided to take the governor completely off. The bike definitely sounded like it was revving higher and taking off faster, but the top speed didn't seem any faster. So I clocked him with the speedometer on my Foreman 500ES across the field and back. He was only reaching 24mph and last week with the governor he was hitting 31mph. Upon further investigation we found that since he'd actually been using the front brake the caliper was dragging and needed to be re-centered.

We also figured out why we had to keep adjusting the idle screw. The stock air filter and boot are garbage and once the motor heats up it's letting unfiltered air in. I happened to look at the filter after it was warm and he was taking off and seen the damn thing spinning freely on the boot. So until we can find a better setup we're just gonna put a bead of high temp silicone on it and let it cure 24hrs.

Little man wanted to race my Foreman 500ES and I took it easy on him the first time. But then he was talking smack so I was relentless the second time, leaving him right off the line and going full bore. Jay was laughing his a$$ off! (My bike will only do 60mph, but it gets there in a hurry, much faster than a Hawk) After that little man just wanted me to follow him around the field and not pass him..

Yeah it's about time for a bath lol. He was crossing a couple of muddy ditches at high speed and every time he did it got a little worse. And I'm sure Jay's back seat doesn't look much better hauling a muddy little bike around lol.

The other good news is Little man can now pull start the bike himself about 80% of the time, which makes it alot easier on Jay.

We also cranked the suspension all the way up so he has to depend more on his balance than his feet.

He's a fast learner. Can't be Jay's kid. Wait, he sure looks like the UPS driver.
That's good stuff there. Father and son bonding.

Oh yes sir, he's got full body armor from his helmet to his toes. The only thing we didn't buy was MX boots because they're so freaking expensive, but Jay found him some heavy duty work boots at the thrift store. It works well too, he hit a steel dumpster at about 20mph and even though it rang his bell he wasn't actually hurt. Jay's also taught him to give the thumbs up if he dumps it and isn't hurt.

Cash's first time in the woods didn't go well, he had never had to worry about trees or small logs across the trail or going around deep mud holes. Within his first 5 minutes of being there he was skirting the edge of the biggest hole, lost his balance and tumbled head first into the muddy water. It was 55° out and he was soaked head to toe including the inside of his helmet. He was also a little upset that his dad grabbed the bike outta the water first, but Jay figured the boy was already soaked and he didn't want water getting in the carb intake.

After that he was just plain old scared and never picked his feet up the rest of the time we were out there. He also took a few spills trying to cross small sticks/logs, to the point he got off the bike and cleared some paths out by hand. He did climb his first hill, after figuring out you need full throttle for that lol.

We did let him ride the 3/4 of a mile road ride home which caused both Jay and I alot of anxiety. Jay told him to stay right behind uncle Frank's bike, which he did, and Jay followed closely behind him. And he made it successfully up my steep and long driveway. As soon as we got in the house my girlfriend stripped him out of the wet gear and clothes and put him in the hot shower, the poor kids teeth were chattering..

I pulled into the big hole Cash fell into and the big 4x4 was sinking fast so I locked it in and hit reverse. I gotta get the better tires on there. Today was also the first time father and son were both on bikes and Cash liked that.
