Love my hawk but does require a little more attention than say a Honda or yamerhammer but a good bike all the same. I have did run into a prob with Oring chain maybe someone can answer. I went with the 17/45 sprocket setup and it will hit 70 but I can’t get the oring chain on because it hits the engine case. With 17 front sprocket the oem chain runs real close. I may have to go with the 15/40 setup but for now just gonna ride. Any suggestions

You aren't the first person to have this issue. I think there is a bit of casting variance in those sprocket covers. I ran a 17 tooth on my last Hawk and ended up having to remove some material from part of the cover to get it off and on. It didn't touch once the cover was on, just trying to install it again. I just removed material in the spot where the chain left some marks.

My current Hawk has a 13 tooth with a 520 chain, which is similar in size to the 428 chain and 17 tooth, maybe a teeny tiny bit smaller, and it doesn't have an issue at all.

If you aren't up for grinding away at the inside of the sprocket cover where it touches the chain, the alternative ratios would be a 16 front 43 rear or the 15 front 40 rear you mentioned. Going with the 16 front would leave you some wiggle room for gearing it up a little more later on (like a 39 rear) if you decide to do so.
