Kansas Mud Report

Edit: 2/24/2008 Changed to thumbnail previews of pictures. Click to view full size

Well it finally warmed up today:

Wow! 37.4F. I'm going riding!

First, I jump out on to the "main" road:

This runs in front of my house. It doesn't look too bad at all.

Well I didn't get too far. This is about 3 miles down the road:

Well? Can I go or what? It's either "proceed at your own risk" or "road closed". Come one people. Make up your minds!

I elected to not proceed. Lets check out "F" road instead. With a name like "F", this has to be a great road - top of its class:

Doesn't look good:

Hey! Another helpful sign!

If that's dirt ahead, what in heck was I just riding on?

I asked these guys what they thought:

They said "get better tires first buddy".

Well, smarty cows, I do have better tires. They're just not on the bike yet! It's freaking 37.4 degrees out. I want to be riding, not wrenching when it's this nice.

Kenda 760s should do the trick (the cows said they were good tires).

Believe or not -- they're DOT approved and USDA Grade "A" rubber.

Back at home, safe and sound:

I'd mount my new tires, but the front one's on back order.

Hope you enjoyed the Kansas Mud Report. There's a few more pictures at:

nice report.
I like those tires they look like they will hook up very nicely.

It's been to cold to go for a ride around here and I am itching to go let me tell ya.
We dont have to many dirt roads right around us but we have lots of cows, well not real cows but people cows that have been supersized by the fast food industry.

The rear is 110/100x18 (4.25/4.60x18). It may rub the chain guard, which I'll just remove if necessary. The swing arm is plenty wide enough.

Let me know if you end up removing the guard. I'm looking at a tire upgrade myself.

If you came this way, you can at least talk to rattle snakes...

Great report. I can relate to the dirt road sign. About 4 years back, I lived and worked on the Navajo Reservation northeast of Flagstaff, AZ. The quickest shortcut from Flagstaff to the small town was a 22 mile dirt road that was always in some kind of disrepair, except for the few days after it was graded.

You would drive about 2 hours from Flagstaff, hit the dirt road, start severely bouncing, or mildly depending on the road's condition, and smack dab in the middle, about 10 miles or so, there would be a sign that proudly stated "Rough Road" as if what had been driven on was just kid's stuff or something like that.

You'll have to hop on that hi-bird when you get it and come over. I'll bet there are back roads all the way from KC to here. I know when I go to the airport I can take a 2-lane all the way to the state line.

I have not been out there yet. I will be checking it out this spring. I hear that it gets pretty crowded though.

I haven't been there either. We might have to meet up over there sometime. Lots of dirt riding?

I may have an additional bike by then.

It's only 57 miles from my house. Looks like I'll need to find a spark arrestor though. Here's some info http://www.nwk.usace.army.mil/pe/Trails-ATV.cfm
