Mightymax Gel Battery.

Maybe I got a "bad" one. It is always possible, but I got about 9 months of use out of it and yesterday, fresh off my trickle charger it cranked twice and died. Showed 12 volts with my multimeter, but the amps were way down.

I will also admit that it is possible my high compression is putting a lot more strain on the battery (I have a starter on standby lol). I am definitely bordering on needing a compression release, and using the kickstarter makes me think I am going to break it.

So, I went to the local powersports store and bought a Moose AGM battery to replace it. If this battery doesn't last I may be looking into a larger higher amp lithium battery.

That might max was a gel as stated, not litium right? I'm looking at a lithium version on ebay for my TTR since the bikemaster lithium died. Does anyone have one of those?

I got the same battery for my hawk and neighbors' ruckus. Plan on using battery tenders on then over winter, though. You think it was the charger? Heard gel can be very touchy.

Yeah, it wasn't a lithium battery. I had a Bikemaster Lithium on my Goldwing and it was going strong after 3 years when I sold the bike. Shame yours died. I did highly consider an Antigravity ATZ-7BS lithium battery with the restart technology, but I didn't feel like spending $130 on a battery at this point.

It's very possible it was my charger. Just odd to me that it was cranking fine when i rode it last a few days ago, then nothing.

It's also possible I just got an old one/bad one off the shelf. It was never very strong to begin with, and I initially attributed it to my increased compression causing it to crank kinda slow.

I kind of believe that scenario more after installing my new AGM battery with a fresh charge on it. Same CCA, much stronger starting.

I have the same gel battery in my Kawasaki brute Force (kymco). It's been great for a year and a half. It's never sat long though since I use the four wheeler often. I use to buy the pirate branded batteries, but last one I bought died in about two weeks. Think it had a faulty cell.

Which is why I didn't call them "junk." I am sure there are a bunch of them out there going strong. I know quite a few guys here have the Mightymax sealed traditional battery as well with good luck. I just wanted to report an issue I had, and whether that issue is due to the company that sold it to me stored it incorrectly, damaged from shipping causing a weak cell, my charger, etc. is entirely up in the air. I have no way to really prove what it was, so I can only speculate.

You would need to check your charge voltage and ensure that you are not out of range of whichever battery is chosen, but as a whole most standard charging systems designed for a lead acid style battery tend to over or under charge lithium batteries. Most lithium batteries tend to work in a charge range of 14.4 to 13.6V (varies a little depending on the battery brand). The best luck I have had with this short of using a LiFePO4 specific reg/rec is to use a more modern solid state (MOSFET) reg/rec without a sense circuit connected (if so equipped). This has generally done a much better job of keeping the voltage within the acceptable range of most reg/recs.

I know what you mean Megadan. I think my compression is like 11:1 or 11.5:1. If I dont get the battery to get the engine to turn in about 4 turns I run out of power and have to kick start it. It is HARD to kick it unless I'm wearing my MX boots. But she usually starts right up.

My compression is only in the low to mid 10's, but I can imagine what 11's would be like. Mine won't kill a healthy battery that quickly though, but you can hear it having to work harder. One nice benefit of the pumper carb is that I can turn the throttle and shoot a bit of fuel in when I start it, and it will usually fire in 1 crank, even from a cold start. That definitely helps!

Slightly off topic, but I can't imagine how strong the vibrations on your bike are with the compression that high. They are definitely more noticeable on my bike now vs. a stock one.

I almost did, but Moose utility batteries are pretty high quality, and I have had great luck with them.

Humm, this might be why mine went to crap. I just bought a Li charger and it couldn't bring it back either.
