Bought a Taotao 125G

My son has been riding a Chinese made 04 Panterra 90 ATV for the last two years. It has ran well but it's suspension is very hard it's plastic isn't aging well. I've been shopping for a newer ATV for him and considered everything from a new Taotao 125G up to an Artctic Cat 150. The front runners were the Taotao and a Yamaha Breeze 125. A local person was selling a like new 08 125G. We looked at both on Saturday and while I liked the Yamaha my son liked the Taotao. I liked the price of the used Taotao and also felt the Yamaha was a bit too fast for him. He is 9 years old. We got the 125G and I'll bank the rest of the money for when he is ready for a larger unit. We took it on the trails yesterday. It did pretty well but the tires it has are not good in snow. They did okay otherwise. The Yamaha was obviously a much more solid unit. We will probably end up with one down the road.

That is sharp. I hope he has many happy miles on it.

He does love it but was getting upset that he had trouble in the snow when his friend with a Polaris Outlaw wasn't. The outlaw had more knobby tires. I do see on the Eagle ATV parts site they do sell an 18 inch knobby tire for $55 each. First I'll see what size the tires from his Panterra are and if the wheels will swap.

Might have to pick up some Kawasaki stickers for it!

Yamaha Blue...

Yamaha stickers. 8)

Nice looking unit. Maybe you would do better in the snow with lower tire pressures?

My 250 2WD quad did fine in the snow, as long as it was dry snow and less than about 6 inches. Low pressure was the key.

Agreed. I wouldn't run more than 8psi anytime, and even less in the snow. Perhaps you'll find a cheap source for new rims, and you can mount aggressive snow tires that will be simple to swap in the summer. You could even stud the snow tires.

With my ATVs I usually just push on the tire with my foot and if it doesn't depress more than about 1/2 inch I call it good.

That sounds really high. I bought an ATV-specific pressure gauge for these wheels, because it's too hard to estimate 8psi.

IIRC my Kawasaki ATV called for only 4 PSI, and in the snow I'd run as little as 2-3.

I bought a special pencil gauge for ATV's that measured 0-10 PSI.

I did get some turf tamer tires for it. Haven't had it offroad yet but it looks like they will do great.

Are the beads holding well for you?

Yes, no problem with them seating on the bead. Have you had issues?

Yes, but with stock China tires. I don't know if it was poor rim or tire quality (or both), but tubes fixed the problem.
