Can I install aftermarket pipe without upgrading carb right off?

I ordered the exhaust but havent order the card and jets yet. I live in vt and am not sure what size jets are best for this area. I was going to get a pod filter but forgot to order it and none of the parts stores around sell them. What would happen if I install the exhaust without messing with my carb? So far I've done sprockets and chain upgrade and ngk plug. The bike has almost 150 miles on it (I know it's not broke in yet) and I max out at around 60. I'm not trying to beat on it to much till it's good and broke in. What's your thoughts? Also, I need advise on a shorter rear shock. I'm 5-6 and 135 lbs and can only touch the ground on my tip toes

Yes you can.. i installed the exhaust and still had the stock carb, i just tweaked the needle shims and main, but you may get away with it as is.. its when you change the intake that you really need to tweak the carb to compensate for more air coming in.

You don't necessarily have to upgrade anything. The stock carb is perfectly capable with just jetting and mixture changes.

Ok, I can do the ole drelem trick and pop this one open right? I just put the exhaust on... i made it work in a way so it doesnt touch the air box but is 3/16 away from it... I know it probably will melt it. I'm going to call some bike shops tomorrow and see if anyone has pod filters. Then I just need to rejet it and adjust the carb. My main question is, is it normal for the exhaust where it comes off the engine to be almost glowing red? It obviously went away when I went down the road and back but when I first started it, it was red. Its WAY louder than stock which I dont mind. I like the sound and the feel of added hp even if it's very little. My dad on the other hand.... he HATES it. Lol.

Also. What's everyone doing with the crank case vent? Just a small breather filter on the end of the hose?

Mine definitely did not glow red.. Not sure why that's happening on yours. It did change color and blue but that's to be expected.
When I installed the Bobbi Pod filter, I cut the forward side of the airbox to allow for clearance and then retained the crankcase line on the airbox I then used Nashau Foil tape to seal the airbox, not the prettiest but it's hidden behind a body panel so its all good

I cant get the picture load. It's not cherry red but it's a little red. Only about 3 inches from cylinder head. I havent adjusted a thing other than valves. I noticed theres more backfire with this new exhaust but I'm guessing that's because it's more free flowing and more open inside.

Lean = hot motor Rich = cooler motor Sounds like you need to work on your jetting as described in above #4 post.

i orderd the new carb and jets today and will be in friday... going tomorrow to pick up the filter from a local shop. my buddy that does ddirtbike repair and races motocross is going to help me do the carb work and ill have him help me readjust the valves. i have 210 miles on it now. i sent him pictures of my spark plug and the one of the exhaust had he said its running extremely lean. the biggest downfall to all this is its gonna be low 60s friday. i work till 4. saturdays gonna be highs of low 30s and i have to go work on my bike all day saturday... so this week of warm temps is gone and it will be to cold to ride till it warms up again but atleast it will be dialed in!

Plenty of info on this forum to study about jetting. Just search. By the way what kind of bike do you have?

So I got the carb and filters and jets today. I instantly put a 110 in and that made a huge difference. Extremely responsive throttle, bike isn't running hot that I can tell, instant startup, and WAY more power. It may be a little rich but it could also be that I forgot to turn on the kill switch and held the choke closed for a bit while in was trying to start it. So far so good. I took it for a rip and got 71 mph with a tail wind. My dad still hates the pipe lol.
