Hawk clutch slipping?
So last weekend I got into a pretty gnarly uphill climb on fist sized rocks and stalled it. Trying to start again I dug in a bit as in rocks gone and digging into terra firma. This is when I noticed that if I gave it a good amount of throttle to not stall out I could hear a horrible sound from the engine as I feed in clutch. The clutch engages at a reasonable spot on the lever so I thought I had it right. Rotella 15w40 that I thought is JASA. So what to do? Fiddle with the clutch adjustments or is it the oil?

You maybe right I couldn't find a JASO rating for any of the Rotella products
on the Shell web site.... maybe there.. but well hiden.. motor bike oil has to do 3 jobs... A... lube the motor... B... handle the high shear loads of the gears in the box.. C... have fast squeeze out to stop clutch slip... ...

It's all there for you to see, in several places actually... on their bottles, on their website pages, and on their PDF files on their website... look for the "; JASO DH-2, MA;" approval

So does anyone have some tips on adjusting the clutch correctly since I'm using the correct oil?

"10 - 20mm of freeplay on the clutch lever" (0.39 - 0.79 inches of freeplay)

What are the implications of not having this freeplay?

Potential clutch slippage. On my English bikes, I maintained 1/8 - 3/16ths freeplay. And I eyeballed it frequently. Not just before I rode. The clutch on my Ariel Red Hunter was so sweet, I did not anything to go wrong. That was a cork lined almost dry clutch. These are wet clutches. More inclined to drag, but hard to overheat. I would check everything from the clutch activator on up to the handlebar lever. I have seen pictures of factory miss-aligned cable holders down on the motor/transmission. Get it all working smooth and you will lower the chances of clutch drag/overheating.

Yes it is. And even more like having no free play at the clutch pedal. Too loose can cause clutch drag, so don't over do it. On a wet clutch, 1/4-3/8 inch free play may be better.
