Free!

Buddy of mine said his wife wanted the old lawn tractor gone. I took him up on it.
He said it ran when he parked it. I got the motor to spin but it needs a battery and probably quite a bit of TLC. It was parked outside under a tree for a few years. The mouse nest was impressive. This was after the initial hose job.

No such thing as free. Somehow that beast is going to cost you money. Good score, though. The Briggs I/C is the SBC of the small engine world.

Nice. I always look for the same type of free stuff. Everything from a Honda Harmony push mower free ,Then sold for $25 after a little carb cleaner. To my most recent success which was a free Baja heat mini bike that sold for $300 which I spent on my new Tao Tao TBR7. The deals are out there and sometimes they dont always cost money.

You are right about the head gaskets. I figured out that if the valves get out of adjustment, it can cause this. The reason i think this is every one I've done the valve lash has been way off. I always check this before I pull the head. Just a theory.

23 years dealing with the Briggs I/C and yet to see a blown head gasket in our shop. Just about everything else, though. Which is surprising when you consider that a railroader can shatter an anvil with a rubber mallet. I’ve seen sketchy stuff on Vanguard twins, usually electrical or water ingress. I get in single cylinder diesels I can spin by hand.

You have been lucky then.... although, is the I/C an L head or ohv? Makes a huge difference... the briggs singles that are ohv have the head gasket issues due to the clamping design..... theres a 3" section of 1/4"wide cylinder where the gasket is simply unsupported, no head bolts near it, across the pushrod tube.... hard to explain, i have 2 17hp briggs on my bench right now, ill slip a head off and take a pic tomorrow...LOL onve you see it cheesy, you will see what i mean....

The L heads rarely if ever blow a head gasket due to even clamping force around the perimiter of the head....

Not always, first thing i check on a poor running engine is valve clearance, then do a cylinder leakdown. The ohv briggs in most mowers (aside from the splash lube variety like in my sabre) use a .004-.006 clearance (splash lubes are 004 -.006 intake and .008-.010 exhaust, due to lack of pressurised oil to carry head out of the head)
