Coolster 125 only turns over in reverse

Have a coolster 125. It will only turn over in reverse. Put in neutral and nothing happens. Ignition switch, starter solenoid, starter/light switch, and cdi replaced. Any thoughts?

Sounds like your gear indicator wiring /neutral start switch has taken a dump on you ,often when your chain gets sloppy or breaks ,it piles up and makes a mess .Remove the cover over the front sprocket and start there

The chain has never broken. It does have some rust and a small amount of slack. Rear sprocket has rust but teeth overall look ok.

To be more specific about the issue, i get green and red lights in neutral. If i press the start button nothing happens. If i shift into reverse, the bike starts cranking on its own without me pushing the start button.

Is there a way to test the neutral safety switch with a multimeter. Seems like a job to get to it and couldnt find a video online.
