New Bike Wont Start

I have recently purchased a new hawk 250. I assembled it and believe everything is correct. The issue I'm having is identical to the issue I found in this thread (http://www.chinariders.net/showthrea...light=clicking). Buzzing, vibrating, and clicking from the starter solenoid relay but no starting. With this knowledge I bought a replacement but sadly the buzzing is still there. I have bought a new battery but that wont arrive till Friday and I was hoping to get some opinions about what it could be until then. I should add that I did get the bike to almost start a few times, I could hear the motor going before it gave out but now there is only buzzing no more slight starts.

If you need any more information lmk and thank you for your time.

Want to know if it is the battery for sure jump it with a car battery (car NOT running). If it immediately cranks over with none of those issues, you have your answer. Just don't leave it connectednfor too long. Hook ot up, try it, remove the jumper cables.

Have you tried charging the current battery?

I am currently charging the current battery completely just to be sure. Ill update you with the results of that as soon as its done. As much of a fool as I would feel like, I hope this is the issue.

Battery fully charged and now the bike will start but will stall at idle. I'm currently thinking is a carb adjustment issue.

This is a new bike, so valves may also be too tight (common default condition). Also, Set your idle higher (the slide screw on the side of the carb, and leave the choke on partially. It should idle even if the valves are a bit tight.

But you should get in there and set the valve clearance before running the bike for hours and hours. Valve seats can get damaged from blow by when they are too tight, and it can disrupt carb function to have exhaust gases pulsing back into the venturi area.

Regarding carb jetting... What is your altitude?

Altitude is about 600ft I will go try changing my idle and let you know how that goes.

Pretty low altitude. You will probably have to bump the pilot jet one step (35 >40, for instance). Just one step up from whatever is in there. And the main jet may also be too small, causing lots of back firing when you let off the gas at speed, crapping out at speed with mostly open to full throttle (not advisable quite yet on your new engine!).

Sounds to me like a Fueling issue. When I run out of gas, it starts briefly and dies. Could the float bowl not be getting filled up? You do seem to have spark, and the battery in the sound clip is OK.

You should check the valves. It may not be causing this, but things compound and add up to trouble. Just in case you have not done this... open the stator window (top left engine case cover) and the crankshaft access port (left side). Rotate 360 degrees the crank counterclockwise to the T mark (TDC) and see if the valve rockers can be moved (both valves). If both valve are not closed, continue to rotate slowly to the next appearance of the T mark and check again. Both valves are closed (gap exists) on one of these rotation points (timing). Set 0.003 to 0.004 on intake side, 0.004 to 0.006 on exhaust side. People have different preferences on this (0.003" intake and 0.005" exhaust might be a common recommendation). But anywhere in that range will allow it to run just fine.

But I think you probably have a fueling issue. You can remove the fuel line to the carb and see that the fuel is flowing freely out of the tube. If so, you should remove the carb and get into the bowl. You can see what jets are in there for future reference (or go ahead and adjust while you have it apart).

You can use a dremel or hacksaw (or coping saw) to make a flathead slot in the breakaway screws to get in there. Check out the float bowl motion. See if the valve is moving freely. Unfortunately, these carbs have no float bowl drain plug, or just pulling that off would answer this question!!

Just a thought here the fueling issue remark brought up by Thumper sounds like the problem. My bike came with rotten dirty fuel that l luckily drain out before starting first time. The valves were adjusted before first start also. Mine is a DLX Hawk, just my thoughts!

I have a nibbi carb ready to install, would it be best just to install it then try to adjust jets and troubleshoot from there.

Whatever you do make sure of free fuel flowing to your carb.

If you know it's a good carb, maybe you bought it for this bike, then why not?

You might find out what jetting people have used for stock Hawk setup and jet the Nibbi that way so you are close to, or on target for your elevation. And if you are concerned about the fuel quality (J4fun's comment), drain the tank and get some fresh clean gas into the system before connecting to the new Nibbi.

Stock Hawk carb jetting at near sea level is too lean. It needs to be unsealed and the idle mixture screw adjusted to at least 1 1\2 turns out. The Main jet also needs to go up in size to at least a 105 and it doesn't hurt to shim the needle with at least one shim.

Installed the new carb it now sounds like this

I have confirmed that there is fuel going to the carb and it had a cold air intake. Anyone know what else this could be?
