Pulse Adrenaline battery overcharging

I had a rescue call from my son last night - his 125 Pulse Adrenaline had just suddenly cut out and was smoking and dripping from around the battery compartment...

Sure enough, the (Lithium Ion) battery was completely shot, so I bought a lead replacement today, but I'm thinking that a battery that's less than a year old should not be self-destructing like that, so my question is, should I risk putting the new battery on, even just to get it home (about 12 miles),or should i get a new regulator/rectifier first?
Cheers
Roger

(P.S. My LF200GY2 is now back on the road following last year's theft and subsequent recovery; I bought another one for spares and completed a fairly comprehensive transplant & re-build job - I'll post some pictures soon )

If I remember right, the Pulse Adrenaline is like the Q Link/Konker, right? I'd put a "known good" battery in it (like from your Lifan), fire it up and then put a tester on it. Does the voltage go up and down with the RPM's a lot? It shouldn't. It should stay basically level off of idle. If it's charging over 13.8/14.2 volts max, it'll need a regulator, would be my guess.
I'll check my Q tonight to confirm those numbers.

I did a short bit of reading on the Lithium ion batterys and found that unless you have a proper management system for charging and regulator to the battery, a bad stator/rectifier can spike voltage and cause them to ruin the lithium battery's.

Yes, that's true.

As usual, 2LZ has given you excellent advice.

Thanks for the kind words, Spud.
Confirmed. Q is a rock solid 13.8 volts across the RPM sweep.

Thanks all.
It turned out to be a straightforward short, though strangely (because it was pretty damned obvious!) I didn't see it at the time. The battery was totally fried.
I tested the output from the alternator, and it was fine, so I've replaced it with a standard lead/acid battery.
The one I replaced it with was rated 3ah, though the original LiIon was rated 7ah - the guy in the shop seemed happy that it would do the job, and he sells to the MX/enduro trade, so I'll take him at his word.
He seemed amazed that (his words) 'a cheap Chinese bike' would use an expensive LiIon battery, and could see no reason for it...
