The bike in the pictures is a 04 crf250x my new daily driver. They aren't known for their longevity but sure are light fun bikes

I have a 05 KTM 450exc in Montana which is also a lot of fun.

I think the 'X' should hold up better than the 'R' version. Does the 'X' have titanium valves?

yep its the same engine as the "R" but has more mild cam, and a restrictive exhaust.

Nice ride though. Excellent power to weight ratio. Great suspension, plus The Button. :P

I took my CRF250R out to a motocross track this weekend with my younger brothers. I quickly realized that I am too old for that nonsense... My cousin (in his mid 40s) races in the 'Vet' class and is amazing on a bike. I don't have much MX experience, and was terrified the whole time that some fast young kid was going to plow into me coming off a jump or something.

I definitely prefer riding open areas and trails. The dunes look like a great time.

The CRF ran awesome. I redid the head two years ago with SS valves and a hi-comp Wiseco piston. But on the last session my brother somehow lost the master link on the chain. I rode my cousin's KX450F which had a Rekluse auto-clutch in it. The bike was too much for me, but that clutch was really sweet. No fear of stalling.

I have heard a lot of good things about the Recluse clutch. I'd like to ride a bike with one someday but I don't think I'm ready to install one for myself.

I was on a motocross track with Roger and his KX and my YZ about 3 weeks ago. It was a private track, just the three of us. Even so I did not like it, not for me.

To me it looked more like an obstacle course than fun. I was always afraid of crashing, and the race bike I was riding mocked me for my cowardice.

Dmmcd, how does your 'R' perform as a trailbike?

Private MX track is good for me. I take a while to learn the course and get comfortable, slowly building up the pace. This place I went to was a practice day for the following day's race, so people there knew what they were doing, and were way beyond my ability.

I don't have too much to compare it to, or many trails to ride on, but the 250r is a great bike. It has plenty of torque down low, but does need to be revved up to take advantage of all the power. I think it redlines at 13k rpm, which is astounding for a single cylinder 4-stroke. It is geared pretty low, with a very close ratio transmission. No e-start, but it fires up on the first or second kick every time. It is also quite tall, or feels that way. But it is very light and easy to throw around.

got to ride the sickest dunes of my life today, they are only accessible during very low water a couple times a year. almost drowned my bike in some of the water crossings but it was totally worth it. the wide angle helmet cam doesn't do these justice at all.
