Warp 9 Aluminum Wheel Bling!
Been on my list to do for some time. I actually ordered the Warp 9 rims over a year a when they had a sale. Rims have been sitting on a shelf and I finally made this a winter project. I disassembled the stock wheels and cleaned hubs, spokes and nipples. I more or less followed Warp 9s guide to wheel building here: http://www.warp9racing.com/how-to/ho...orcycle-wheel/. Take your time and lacing up a wheel is pretty strait forward. You will need a truing stand.
I put a dab of grease where each nipple contacted the hub and used a small dab of anti-seize on the threads of each spoke. The stock spokes and nipple are all the right length to work with the the Warp 9 rims. The front the spokes are all the same but the back wheel spokes have different bends to them depending on which side they thread through the hub. These are the wheel sizes I went with: Rear Wheel (yes it’s spec-ed as a front on the Warp 9 web page) (weight savings 0.75 lbs rotating mass) 3.5” works fine with the tires I’ve picked, they didn’t have any red wheels in the 3” and I went with bling over function... SM Rims (#89-17363-3) Wheel Type: Front 36 hole, Rim Size: 17 x 3.50, Rim Color: Red Front Wheel (yes also spec-ed as a rear on the Warp 9 web page) (weight savings 1.5 lbs rotating mass) Same width as CSC 19” upgrade wheel. MX/Enduro Rims (#89-19363) Bike Type: MX/Enduro, Rim Grade: Standard 7000, Wheel Type: Rear 36 hole, Rim Size: 19 x 2.15, Rim Color: Red Last edited by 3banger; 04-04-2018 at 01:44 PM. |

I bought my Warp 9 rims when they had a sale. Paid $115 for the front and $169 for the rear. I reused the OEM hubs, spokes & nipples so my total up grade Cost was $284 plus all of the fun build labor. Rear hub is the cush-drive style CSC originally spec-Ed on the RX3. I’ve done some decently rough stuff with these wheels and spoke tension is stying nice and tight.
Performance improvement is minimal, in theory the best place to save weight is in rotating parts. The bling factor and enjoying the process where also part of the value for me. |

I just want wider rims more appropriate for street tires. Stock widths are perfect for more aggressive tires for dirt. I'd like to have two complete wheel sets so just swapping wheels, brake pads, and final drives will change the bike from knobbies to street with appropriate final drive ratios. Therefore, I need the additional hubs and spokes. Funny thing is, I can buy wheels from CSC ($325) with all the little parts cheaper than buying all but the rims separately. Since the stock spokes will fit the wider rims, might just do that. Who knows? Too many projects going on right now to think about it.

Was asked in a PM how the Warp 9 rims are holding up; and the answer is very well! Almost 10k on the rims which is not a lot in 4 years but a good number of rides involve playing on some moderately chunk off road stuff.
Had a flat on a remote CO dirt pass last year and all of my field fixes failed since I had already shredded the tube by time I realized I was flat! Ended up having to ride 20+ miles on the flat tire. Rim held up like a champ. Also some ride video from a summer trip to Betty Bear hut. Flats below are not from this ride. They were the result of a nail on a dirt road. |

Your truing stand is much fancier than mine. What brand is it?

May we see some detailed pics of it? I'd like to see how I could improve on my stand.

So you are correct the rim I used for the rear is a front 3.5x17” in the Super Moto section on the Warp 9 site. And the rim I used for the front is a rear 2.15x19” in the MX section of the Warp 9 site. |
