Front sprocket change
I have been reading about doing a front sprocket change to a 12tooth. Just wondering if I need to change both sprockets and chain or just do the front sprocket for now? Also has any one done this job before and how hard was it,?

What ATV are you talking about, and how many teeth does it have currently?

I changed from a 14 to a 12 and had no need to change the chain. Job was easy less than 10 minutes

If the current sprockets and chain have relatively few hours on them, I wouldn't hesitate to replace just the countershaft sprocket. With any luck, there is enough adjustment to take up the links. If not, cut one out.

2 teeth off of the front is the equivalent to adding 8 teeth to the rear.
You will get more low end torque and a little slower top end speeds. If you add a larger sprocket to the rear and a smaller sprocket to the front you will get even more torque. For the most part changing the front sprocket is easier then doing the rear. I asked what ATV this is being done on because some have CVT transmissions.. others have a manual clutch. The process of changing the front sprocket is different for each style but both are still easier then the rear. A chain breaker tool is a good one to have when removing links. Does a clean job of it. |

Thanks for the response. I am looking for a little more touque. Has some trouble pulling up hills. It is a auto trans with a wet clutch. After I get the sprocket changed out I going to try and put 2 inch spacers on the back tires for more stability
