2007 gy-5

I just picked up a 2007 American Lifan gy-5 a few days ago from Brian at x-treme Moto (great guy). I have everything assembled and have perfromed all the checks that everyone has listed on the prep thread. I am still breakin in my engine, but I noticed that my bike has a hesitation when getting on the throttle a little to hard. I have not opened it up, but unless I totally ease on the bike, the hesitation is there. After reading all of the forums, I am thinking I need to richen up the low speed mixture screw. The bike starts right up, and idles fine, but I just have this slight hesitation. I was not going to worry about it till the engine is fully broken in, but I was wondering what everyone here would suggest to do? I thank you all so much, and look forward to your responses.

Drop the carb needle clip one slot, set mixture screw to 2 turns out. Wait for more adjustments until after break-in. It WILL get smoother with some miles, but the low - mid rpm range on these engines is lean, and that's a BAD thing during engine break-in.

Mine did the same thing, started and ran fine but if I tried a quick roost, would bog... Dropped the clip down 2 notches and I'm about 2 1/4 turns out and runs like my old XR, immediate throttle response (Won't jump like it though..)
Break it in first though, these bikes get better with time, unlike Chinese wine...

thanks for the responses. I guess I will try to put some more miles on the bike, then I will richen it up a little and go from there. I just want to get at least 200 miles on it, before I start messing with the carb. I will keep everyone updated.

Ok, as red has suggested, I drop my c-clip down one spot, and I have my mixture screw two turns out. It did make a huge difference, even though there is some hesitation. I am going to finish breaking my engine in at this setting, then I am going to fine tune the carb. Thanks for all you help. Btw, chaning the carb was really easy, only a 5 min job. Thanks again.

Are you still running the stock Spark plug or have you changed that out yet? You may even consider dropping down another notch now that you know how to do it.

Yes, it is the new 07 with the counter balance engine. I still have the stock plug in it. I think tomorrow I will lower the c-clip another notch, make it richer for break in, and go from there. Any other suggestions, let me know. Thanks everyone.

I finally have the carb tuned. I have one new question. I noticed the the bike is hard to start with the kick start. Almost like the kick start is slipping, and not turning the engine over to get it started. I know its not a huge deal since the electic starter works great, but I would like the kick start ot work just in case. I am not sure where and how the kick start is sliping. I do know, that when I kick it to start, it doesnt sound like the engine is kicking over. Any ideas, please let me know. Thanks for all the help.

pump the kick start up till its on the top of the compression stroke, then slam it. mine only kick starts when she's warm. you'd be better off pushing it down a hill and poping 2nd gear.

The compression procedure works well with 4-strokes. It gets alittle better after breakin.

Rolling down the hill works too. I use to have to push start my GPZ after work everyday.
