Wet

I took a weekend ride to northern Wisconsin this past weekend to attend a cousins' 95th birthday bash. It rained almost all day Saturday.

The rain jacket I bought last year performed well. Kept me warm and dry without getting clammy. Too bad I didn't buy rain pants at the same time. I was soaked from the knees down and had lakes in my boots.

As I'd done this trip before a couple years ago, taking back roads and my time, I decided on doing the trip on the super slab, aka I90/94.

The party started at 1pm, but somehow I managed to be less than 75 miles from the place at 10:30. So, on to back roads to kill some time and find a place to eat my lunch and wring out my socks. I wanted to stop and get some pics of the northern tamarack swamps and forests but there was nowhere to pull off and it was pouring most of the time anyway.

I stopped in Fall Creek, WI to gas up and spied a half dozen big cruisers and their wet passengers huddled under cover by the diesel pumps. A couple people came over to look at the CX. When they saw the IL tag on the bike, they asked how far I'd ridden today. When I told them almost 300 miles with a bunch more to go, one of the guys said that his group was obviously a bunch of pussies because they rode all of 9 miles from Eau Claire for breakfast and weren't going back on the road until the rain stopped.

I ate my lunch at a small park in Fall Creek, drained my boots and wrung out my socks. Then made my way to Eau Claire.

I haven't been to my cousins' place in nearly 20 years and forgot that she lives at the end of a 1/4 mile dirt road. Make that 'mud road' after all the rain. Lots o' fun on street tires.

After the shindig, I rode up to Cameron, WI and spent the night at my folks place. The rain was finally letting up.

The return trip was pretty uneventful.

I planned and taking back roads home but road construction dumped me back on the interstate twice, so I stayed on that until I was between Madison and Janesville. I was back in my own neck of the woods and know which county roads to take to bypass the madness of Sunday and I90.

The bike is filthy, my boots are still wet and my arse hurts.

So cool that you rode in the rain all that way to celebrate a 90th birthday. You're heartier than I.

Thanks for the link, Weld. I'll have to check that out.

I should also check with a buddy in Tejas, he has several Iron Butts under his belt, as it were, and is doing the Iron Butt Rally this year. 11,000 miles in 11 days.

Spud would be a natural at an Iron Butt rally. He just rides and rides.

I hope your cousin enjoyed her 95th birthday.

I hate riding in the rain.

Sprung for it, Weld, but got it from Amazon. Free shipping and will be here Friday.

I'm looking forward to your report. Several forum members over the years have used them, but I haven't tried one yet.

I'll let you know, good, bad, or indifferent.

For grins though, I picked up a 36"x22"x4" hunk of foam if all else fails.
