Don't let your chain get this bad!!

I've been meaning to change the chain and sprockets fo a while now, letting a chain get this bad is asking for disaster!!

When it was apart I cut a small notch across the snap ring (circlip to us in the UK) groove so I can flick it out with a small screw driver.

Job done with a nice new "O" ring chain.

For the record the chain and sprockets have done 8056 miles.

Jonathan.

CZ, I can't see the photos on this computer, but I can only imagine the horror and terror!

Is there any rule of thumb for the UK as far as chains go due to the wet climate there? (vs. other places that aren't so rainy?)

mods?

Some interesting mods on your bike it seems.
Is that a chain tensioner and a lubrication system? Tell us more.

I was checking chain prices today. I'm doing the sprockets and chain at the same time. I figure I'm not be able to afford an o ring chain. I'm at the end of the build, and very short on cash. :( I think I'll have to make due with a $30 D.I.D. roller chain. I'll have to do mantainance on it, but it's better than what I've got, it's 36 years old. It's not a speed bike, I should be ok don't ya think? I'll go for the o ring when I've got the cash. (about $90 from my bike store.) Less chain lube flying around = cleaner bike. N2r.

The wee bottle is a manual chain oiler (http://chainoiler.co.uk/). I doubt it's usefullness on a roller chain, hasn't extended the life of mine much. I can see it doing a good job of keeping the rings wet on an "O" ring chain.
The chain tensioner is made out of Yamaha and KTM bits, as I have a Yam R6 rear shock fitted, (a great improvement, no a vast improvement) the bike rides a bit taller. With the tension correct at maximum suspension compression it's very slack when at normal hight.

Jonathan.

It depends if the bike is a daily driver or not, in the past I've never had to adjust an "O" ring chain between tyre changes (6k miles), keep the rings oiled and they last 20-25k miles.

Jonathan.

Ebay is a cheap option for chain. 3 friends and I went in on some bulk 428H chain. Total price was under $60 including shipping and we each got 3 chains and 3 master links.
