Doh! Hawk 250 brand new all mods trouble starting now

Long story short, I bought a hawk 250 and it looks great, I am having trouble starting it. I did the ebay exhaust mod, pod air filter, mikuni carb upgrade.

Now, i have ridden the bike twice. It has trouble starting, it gets spark its the carb I believe.

I had a 120 main jet and it started on that and I think it was too rich, it has a 110 now. Still tough start and the spark plug was black on the tip. Gas also leaks out of the carb around the air filter. Not sure what to do from here I’m not a carb wizard like some.

Hey there. Glad you got a bike, but I'm sorry it's giving you trouble. I don't know much about carbs, but it sounds like the float might be sticking. Usually if that's the case, the fuel comes out an overflow pipe, not the carb.

Another major factor with these bikes is valve adjustment. Have you checked that yet? It makes a HUGE difference! Don't get mixed up between 100ths of a millimeter and 1000ths of an inch! There's lots of guides on Youtube; for example

Hope you can get it running!

What pilot jet do you have installed? Did you adjusted the idle mixture? As others have stated i would adjust the valves before trying to tune it. It will be a loosing battle if they are set too tight.

I have the stock pilot jet that comes in the aftermarket mikuni carb.

As for the valve clearances, I will adjust those and see.

I had been adjusting the mixture screw and it doesn’t do much for helping it start.

But what is the pilot jet size? They don't always come with the correct pilot jet size.

another vote for the valve adjustment.....most (actually, all, it seems.. ) of these bikes come with tight valves...will cause hard starting cold,..even harder starting when warm, and idle/running problems.
