Zongshen ZS166FMM running in method and oil type

I have a new 250cc ZS166FMM motor I bought it from a guy that got rid of his china bike and parts business he told me it's only been put in a bike to test if it was working so I think I need to run it in but i dont know how do I just go easy on it for a while or is it more complicated, I don't have a manual but is full synthetic 10W-40 or 15W-40 car oil ok to use or should I use mineral oil, it does not have a sight glass but it has a dipstick. I've looked for pictures of my engine with red letters of "BSE" on both sides but I can't find any, were there many CDI versions like mine

You need to to use a wetclutch compliant engine oil. normal auto car oil normally is not motorcycle safe.



Diesel engine oil mostly is...


otherwise its best to purchase a motorcycle specific oil.



someone else will probably chime in regarding is a full synthetic safe for break in to me it seems overkill.



I'd just go mineral oil 10-40 and stay of WOT rev limit for awhile then change the oil after a few full tanks of gas riding 'normally'

It USED TO BE conventional wisdom to use regular "dead dinosaur" oil in an engine during break-in. Then, if you feel the need, change to partial or full synthetic.


In all honesty, unless you have a daily long commute, or are maybe running a long distance at a constant high speed, you really don't need synthetic oil. My personal opinion is that, as cheap as a quart of conventional oil is, you probably do better for your engine to just stay with conventional oil and just change it more frequently.


(I'm an old guy with a long memory. I remember when synthetic oil was first becoming a thing. At the Corvette factory in Bowling Green Kentucky they started filling the engines with full synthetic. They found that the engines never really got broken in. They changed back to conventional oil for the break in period, then recommended switching to synthetic.)
