YamaZong XT200GY-2 Gets a New Shock Spring

When I installed a Yamaha, XT225 swingarm on my Zongshen motorcycle, I also installed an XT225 shock absorber.

The stock, XT225 shock is noted for its soft coil spring, designed to support the average, 150-pound, Japanese rider. Therefore, about a month ago, I bought a stiffer coil spring from Cogent Dynamics. After the spring arrived, I installed it on my spare, XT225 shock absorber.

Today my good friend Andy helped me install my spare shock with the stiffer coil spring. After installing the shock, we measured the unloaded sag with the bike still on the jack. Then we adjusted the preload to the maximum, and we got a sag of 2.75 inches with me seated on the bike. The XT225 shock absorber has 7.5 inches of travel, so my current setting is just about ideal.

So far I have only had a chance to ride my Zong about six miles, on the pavement; however, the shock feels great! Of course, I will report back after I get a chance to ride the bike offroad.

Although I do need to test this coil spring further; I am quite sure I am going to enjoy my Cogent Dyanmics coil spring. As a first test of the spring, I rode my bike at 40 mph over a familiar, sudden, nasty dip in the pavement. Previously, my bike would bottom out the suspension on this dip; today, the shock handled the dip very smoothly, with aplomb. So far, I am very happy with my new, Cogent Dynamics coil spring.
