I monitor my email continously so when you get here and if it fits your schedule (and mine, may be gone to san antonio to work) give me a PM and will buy you a steak . Greek family restaurant across from George west Court house that is excellent for seafood too.

Also welcome to overnight if needed, it's cheap...as in free. And shop for repairs if needed

Understand if you need to push through to Laredo

Let the adventure begin!

Wow. A new reason to visit George West. Unless things have changed in GW, there's good Texican food in town, as well.

Well, the Hawk quest is over. Spun a nut off the primary drive shaft. Limping it home after bodger fix outside Double Springs Alabama. Threads are stripped on shaft. Cross threaded nut on shaft. Keeping fingers crossed it will hold for 300 mile trip home. Will hop on the Honda and slab it to Laredo. Oh joy, oh rapture. 😭

Sorry to hear that, Mark. When you return and have time, I'm sure several of us could benefit from a picture of the cross-threaded nut.

Unbelievable. The venerable CG motor. This isn't supposed to happen!
As W&G says, pics please when you have time.

Well I made it home swapped all of my kit onto the CRF250L and will depart at daybreak tomorrow. Won't pull the clutch cover off till I get home from SA. Anyhow I found a great pic of the nut that escaped. The nut sits inside the oil filter and hold the oil filter assembly as well as the the drive gear from the crankshaft. The oil filter housing was destroyed when it came off and the drive gear slid up the shaft and disengaged from the clutch gear. I removed all of the trashed oil filter assembly, flushed the case, and cross threaded the nut back on the stripped shaft. All this alongside Hwy 278 between Cullman and Double Springs Alabama. Bike ran great the entire 300 miles home. Probably shouldn't have run it that far with all the metal in the oil, but what the heck, I'm going to have to split the case to R/R the crank. Kudos to the CG engine for it's bear bone simplicity, ease of repair, and downright toughness for getting me home. I'm impressed and sorry I won't be taking her south. If I had a week or two to spare, I'd repair it and head south, no hesitation.

Yeah that's what I thought. I tightened and put locktite on every fastener, replaced the wheel bearings, put needle bearing in the swing arm, dielectric grease on every connection. Other than religiously changing the oil I never gave the engine a second thought.
