Most of those older bikes where mild steel. 4130 didn't really catch on until the 80's and only on high end bikes. ($350-600) at the time. GT, Dyno, Haro etc. But even their entry level bikes where just steel, not alloy.

Sorry for the rant. Just an old bmx freak that used to build them. Heck, I still build them. Lol

Also a pic of most of the bikes/parts I acquired from the curb. Project inventory.
If you ever come across a new style Schwinn Sting Ray/Chopper with the wide 3 speed hub, give me a holler.

And the higher end tubing is very thin wall, around 0.4-0.5mm IIRC.

This what they look like if taken care of.

The one I am interested in has a 170mm OLD(over locknut dimension) Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub. Actually, the hub is all I'm interested in. That, and it's shifty bits.

Son of Weldangrind had that exact bike. It was $100 retail, and he only rode it a couple of times. It went to a new home just before Christmas for almost what I paid for it.

This is what I thought you meant, Cheesy. I wanted one of these in the worst way when I was a kid.

Nope, just a pedal bike that looks like a dirt bike.

I just put that blue free spirit on craigslist. See if I can get some cash out of it.
