Okay now I'm down to two sprockets to pick from.. the first one mentioned, the 272, and now another one I just found - the JT279, but it's even lower on teeth, it's 30T. I know that's only one tooth, but how much of a difference is more than ten teeth going to make? From 44T down to 30T or 31T - that's a jump, eh?

And I'm a stupid, my inside diameter is 58mm not 56... my bad.

Okay I’m no expert. I do have a tbr7 that came with a F12/38R setup. I went to a F13/32R and it was a big difference too big for me. I’m going to try a 12/32 setup and hopefully that will be a good middle ground. There is a website sprocket calculator check it out it helped me out.

Okay - just got my chain today! Got my sprocket on Saturday so I'm going to have some fun soon.

Went with the JTR279 30T sprocket. Also went with a Niche X-ring chain - 108link... hopefully I was on with my measurements. Found a chart that helps calculate how many links you need.

I'll put some pics up before / after. Wasn't expecting a black sprocket! Does match most of the rest of the bike. Most of the trim is black so that'll be cool.

I'm no expert myself at all - I do have a 13T in the front, can't really change that and have room though. Was going to pop a 17T on the front but wrong pitch; couldn't find a 520 17T but did find one to fit the back - 30T. Hopefully it wont be that drastic of a change.. and if so, I may just get a 34T? Funky little bike - going to open more ponies up too; doing a cut-n-gut on my catalytic converter. I also added one of those RAIZIN voltage regulators into my electric system - seems to do a LOT better with my LED headlamp (DZG H4 - Amazon). And just added a BBR Tuning boost bottle!! HOLY CRAP!! I don't know why Yamaha stopped using these but, I got one just to try and JUESUS man; THAT really helped my idling and reallllly smoothed out my torque. If you guys already have that stupid SAI system: you can remove all that, block off the exhaust port, and hook that bottle up to the intake inlet for the SAI. Cannot remember where I got my blocker plate for the exhaust port, but was about eight bucks and comes with a gasket and new bolts.

Couldn't find anyone with a welder to help OR an exhaust that would fit so - as per my usual, I got a small MIG welder in the mail, going to do it all myself - as per my usual

Now off to youtube to watch some motocheez videos on changing out that rear sprocket

I have the new sprocket on - had to order a chain break tool, didn't have one on hand.. but until then, I do have some concerns about the 'true' of my tires.. my back wheel is a little wobbly when I'm spinning it just loose on the axle. Though, I didn't really notice any wobbling when I was riding; especially after ~70mi. Is this something to have taken somewhere to be performed? I do have the wrench, just not a torque wrench. Those are insanely expensive.. Is there a way of 'truing' my wheels myself? I was watching a few videos, but without that torque wrench I can't exactly follow along.

To be able to do this would I: Need to have the tire off the rim? Would need to loosen all the spokes up and start from a baseline of some kind? Would I really need a truing stand?

Did not see this in the resource and info guide. Unless I'm just stupid lol

Update: I'm going to give truing the wheel myself a shot. seems like it's pretty straight forward so, why not. Chain break tool coming tomorrow. Big surprise, and relief, that I didn't have a snap ring in between my sprocket and hub! Bolts had loc-tite but, was RED.. didn't apply new loc-tite - just went with the book torque spec for the bolts; 19ft-lbs (228in-lbs). I got a Niche X-ring chain - tensile strength states around 8k-lbs of force before breakage... I'll take that for face value - won't even hit that with this little engine lol

Update 2: Okie dokie, taking it somewhere. I give up on trying to straighten the rim.. plus I can get the shop to see if everything else is even safe for riding.. Will update again later!

Alright - so a no go on the 'local' power sports shop. Refused to touch the bike!

Took another crack at truing the back rim myself and - done! Was actually surprised in myself because; I've never, ever, performed that part of maintenance.. and it was easy!

So, after I got the back straightened out - swapped to the 30T sprocket, fit like a glove, and fed the chain through. Had to break a few links out at first - took for a nice slow ride - got back and saw the chain REALLY loosened up and is now a little too loose. So, I'll take one or two out, depending on how loose it is. But, immediately felt a difference in that new 30T. I like how much it dropped the RPM's - so much that I can definitely cruise in 4th going about 40-45MPH! Just purrs along. The only thing I didn't have time, or gear for, was an off-road trial. And after seeing the chain coming back from a short run; very glad I didn't take off in the dirt..

I'm definitely happy with the overall drop in RPMs myself, FINALLY cruising in 5th!

Now - I'll have to get the chain tightened down, and give an off-road trip a shot!

The new chain btw, was REALLY stiff when I fed it through and was lining up to take a few links out - set the fork adjustments, torqued the axle nut and was still where I left it - about 3 fingers width from the mid-fork slack in the chain. Is that normal; for a new chain to loosen up and kind of relax? Honestly first time I'm doing any kind of 'in depth' (to me) maintenance; and wasn't too bad. Now knowing what happens behind closed garage doors, I think I'll just skip the shop for everything I don't have enough sense to do myself.

I do have a before and after but it's not exactly that great I guess lol just changed the chain color to a gold color, and a black smaller sprocket in the back. Anyone remember Rockets Sprockets??? heh heh..

another update to come - would be best to post that in the other threads for riding and such; correct? Been a long time since I was apart of any forums. Don't want to mess up on the rules..

And does anyone have any recommendations for spoke-less rims?? Maybe like a solid dish rim? I'm not finding much of anything friendly for a dual-sport to take off-roading.

I was having some difficulty finding sprockets but now I think I'm straight!

Got the 13T front, 30T rear - nice and low putts, feels a little grunty. I may play with a 34-35T later just to see. I haven't been off-road yet! And have the X-ring chain. That thing feels like a boat chain (not exactly like..), HEAVY heavy.

When I went out yesterday for a quick test, I had some front sprocket cover chain smack... probably due to the chain loosening up - but how would I go about making that not happen? Already straightened my chain guide, so that's actually a really big help so far. I was having my tire rub on my chain guard on the rear fork - tire needed truing. Just being cautious - this chain is way beefier than the chain it came with. Came with the 520 setup already - original sprocket in the back is 44T, dropping to the 30T and taking about 2-3 links out of the 108 link chain I have and taking more out today. Didn't change the teeth up front, still a 13T. .

And there she is! I definitely find this much more in line with a 'dirt bike' feel. Obviously from the looks - but feel too. I can't remember what the difference is in weight compared to the Hawks, but this one is almost weightless.. very responsive on turns and agility!!

And did the Hawk come with an 18in rear tire?? I thought that a little amazing honestly. Usually it's just a 19in. rear. Plus, I've got a monster 21in. front!

I have the 13 front and 32 rear with a 100 link 520 chain on my tbr7.

30 rear seems a bit extreme with the 13 front. Let us know how that works out. You could always tweak it with a 12T front for roughly the same setup as a 13/32.

I prefer to have more teeth, hence the larger sprockets.

I'm using the same lever set on mine and clutch doesn't operate as smooth as the stock one did. I believe it's because they were made with a large hole to hold the cable end which allows it extra slack in the cable and it binds a little. Ive ordered a honda cable that has a plastic piece over the cable end that will fit properly taking the play out of the cable and allow it to rotate more smoothly. I'll let you know how it works when it comes in.

I agree with you entirely with the stock clutch lever setup over aftermarket. I was able to find the "stock" style ones on Amazon for like 15? I think. Left it in my cart just in case the red ones didn't work out! So - my clutch cable was actually kind of rubbing on my front fender when I would full lock left / right. I loosely zip tied it just a pinch closer out of the way of the fender, not even tight - last night I took that zip off and there was about 1/16in slack opened up -_- I'm about to take it around to see how the new sprocket and all feels after taking another link out and straightening the wheel out. I think that was my mistake on the zip tie lol.. seemed like a good idea

Do you happen to have a part number on that cable? Was going to change out soon anyway - that slack kind of worries me. And did you get a set length or is it a cut-n-fit style? Was going to get the cut-n-fit so I could get my length right.

Definitely! It's about 75 today here - no idea where this weather came from. The last two days it's been about 50-something during the day / 20-something at night. NOT rider friendly lol

I was thinking the same - I may go up in teeth in the rear. The new sprocket looks so tiny compared to the stock one

Kind of funny looking.

Was thinking if this is too much, maybe about 35 - 39T? 30T from 44T is a big drop.. first time doing my sprockets. I'll let you know!

I actually bought a Honda brand one because on my big suzuki street bike the oem Suzuki cable was smoother and thicker than the motion-pro. I'm not sure it makes any difference on these little bikes but I ordered it anyhow. Here's the number Honda 22870-KPS-900 Clutch Cable CRF150F 2003-2005 CRF230F 2003-2017. You can see the little cover on the cable end. Motion pro seems to have them too.

know what works really smooth for a clutch lever? converting to hydro....LOL i wsa going thru a cable a year on my shinray, bit the bullet and bought a hydraulic master, slave, and hose, and havent looked back...
