Had a chance to sit on both the Kawasaki X 300 Versys and the BMW R310GS at the motorcycle show. Main impression was that the Versys feels like a bigger bike. There is more cockpit out in front of you and the whole bike feels taller.
The display listed the following costs for accessories for the Versys: $100 for the 30 liter top box and apparently another $97 for a color panel to match the color of the bike. $430 for the hard saddlebag set. (I noticed that like the RX3, the hard side bags are bolted in place and rather rudimentary plastic. I did like the top loading feature.) $214 for "frame slider," which I think means upper crash bars. $290 for a centerstand. $110 for hand guard shells. $220 for a tall seat. Also available were lights, tank pad, power outlet. Obviously hard to compare directly with the RX3. The Versys is available in ABS, for example. And its a 300cc twin. But MSRP for the non-ABS is $5400, plus $360 freight. I think that you'd spend another $750 to buy the options that come standard on the RX3. Add dealer set up, a more expensive center-stand, and a few other items that Joe listed in his comparison chart. The Versys looks like a nice bike. But I have had two fun years on my RX3 and its running great. |

Here are a few photos. The gray Versys 300 is the base model, and the green Versys 300 has about $2000 in Kawasaki accessories.

I doubt it will be hard to get the v300 for less than msrp tbh, my last 4 new bikes were all under msrp with tax and all fees since 2008. I typically look at Romney Cycle in WV as it's got the best overall prices on the east coast and they only charge a doc fee of 75 dollars, no setup of delivery. Every bike they have is well below MSRP.
If the RX3 stays at 4200 or so like it was with doc/freight etc it'll probably be about 800-1500 under the V300 but have more goodies from the start. On the other hand the V300 has optional abs and likely a better set of brakes and headlight as well as better fuel range. RX3 is still a great value and it's set up well from the start. It could use a better headlight, better front brake, more fuel range and longer valve adjustment intervals to tie up its weaknesses though. |
