I'll grab the tire sizes for you guys when I get home from work, my Konker has Bridgestones on it. The back tire is way wider than the front one, I'm guessing the back rim is at least an inch wider as well, I'll post the rim size as well as the tire size.

The rim size is 17x2.50; the tire sizes for this rim would be about an inch wider than the rim.

Thanks Stew. I want to choose tire sizes wisely for Son of Weldangrind.

I am now officially confused. So my 17x2.5 rim is supposed to have a 17x3.5" tire?

A size 17x2.50 rim will probably accommodate a size 3.50-17 tire. The rim measurments are different from tire measurements. The rim width is measured at the base of the side flange, not the outside of the side flange. Also, a tire must be wider than a rim, or you would easily damage the rim when striking any object at the side of the tire.

I'm just gonna wait for Stew's reply on the tire sizes. It's working for him, so I'm gonna try to replicate his sizes.

If you check the manufacturer's tire fitment quides, they will tell you what size rims are appropriate for any size tire. You want to make sure you get the correct size tire for the rims on your wheel. Otherwise, the tire will not mount properly, and also will not inflate properly. This results in improper handling of the bike, and undesirable tire wear.

I'm think you're wise to follow this path, Weld. I was trying to help Brockway understand the difference between rim sizes, and tire sizes.

Not only that, but you can create a minimized contact patch, even though the tire mounted and inflated properly.

I'm surprised how many people don't follow the manufacturer's tire fitment guides. The Honda XR650L owners are notorious for trying to fit the widest possible tire on the rear wheel. All tires are designed to accommodate a certain rim size; people should follow the manufacturer's recommendations.

I think if Roger's 50HP KX uses a 110, that ought to be enough for most eny bike.

I agree! The XR650L guys want the widest possible tire strictly for "poser" status. Some of these guys do very little off road riding, yet they want the oversize tires mounted on their bikes.

I mounted a gigantic rear tire on Son of Weldangrind's XR200R, but that's only because it was free.

For reasons I've discussed in the past a large meaty rear knobbie HURT the performance of my Q on and off road.

Even my KLX's on road performance (practical top speed and mileage) was hurt by the very aggressive 606's I fitted.

On the trail though they are excellent and that's why they are there.

FREE is an excellent reason to mount such a tire! Hubris is not a good reason.
