The internet is correct. You should add 1.6 L (1.7 quarts) of motor oil to your engine after an oil change. You might enjoy reading the following thread which describes the dry sump engine in your motorcycle. Post #5 explains the proper way to check the engine oil level.

I don't have a solution to the neutral issue, but can confirm that it's much easier with the engine off. I would hazard a guess that it's something electrical tied to the neutral selector cable, as my problem was temporarily remediated when I replaced that cable under warranty.

For the record, changing my oil today made a nice difference in it going into neutral . Lots easier but still not as smooth as my nc700x, rj

My RX3 is a bear to get into neutral at stop lights . I can get it into first or second but neutral I really have to work at and then the light usually changes so off I go. I'm running Valvoline 4 stroke mc atv 15/40 jaso-ma2 oil and have the cable adjusted properly I think . Little bit of play ,no sign of clutch slippage. My NC700x is pure buttery smooth to find neutral. It's magical.
I know I can just leave it in gear at stop lights, but I'm anal about it and even kick my car into neutral at stop lights and it's a automatic . It's my thing OK.
Is this an oil issue?
dirty oil issue? change oil every 3000 miles
cable adjusting issue?
or design issue?
Have around 6200 miles on Don Quixote (for those of you who read Joes great book.) thanks, rj
I was highly impressed at how smoothly mine shifted, even into neutral, when it first arrived. I ran the factory oil for about 300 miles, and then changed to Rotella T after reading this thread. Neutral has suddenly become very difficult to find for me. I'm going to try Spud's Delvac on my next oil change...picked up a gallon tonight at Wal-Mart.

Take a digital photograph of your receipt, and fill out the online rebate at the following link. In about 8 weeks or so, you will get a check for $5/gallon from Exxon Mobil.

https://apfco.net/secure/R8236W/Home/Entry

I can't resist the price of $6.22/gallon, so I am going to stock up with 5 more gallons of Mobil Delvac 1300. The rebate limits you to 5 gallon jugs per household.

A fresh oil change does make finding neutral easier. However, if the engine is running, the small neutral indentation on the shift drum star will still make the job tricky.

Changed my oil for the first time on this bike at 490 miles.

Oil is pretty black and the drain plug had a good amount of "metal paste" attached. Both screens were clean save a few small metal flecks and a little bit of gasket material.

The filter looked pretty dark as well like it collected fine metal too.

The oil smelled a lot like gas so I'm sending a sample to get it checked in another 500 miles. I used the maxima 10w40 that CSC sells for this change.

I'd recommend dumping that oil at 100-200 miles vs 500.

Also changed the sprocket to 13T and adjusted the chain to 1 1/4 inch of slack and the bike is shifting butter smooth now with zero issues with neutral (didn't really have any neutral issues but the shifting was notchy).

Dang where did time go? I'm thinking my dirty oil is a big contributor in my hard to find neutral problem. Ya Think. rj
<chuckle> Yep, life with the RX3 seems to be very much like being with the right woman. Seems like you just started dating, and suddenly it's your 10th anniversary.

Just out of curiosity, which of your bikes seem to find you in the saddle most?

The last several days I have been shifting into neutral easily while the engine is running. It has been about 850 miles since the last oil change with Mobil Delvac 1300.

OK boys and girls, I'd like some opinions...

remember I live in a third world city, on a third world Island, in a third world Country so my availability to stuff is limited

I was shopping for the Mobil Delvac 1300 oil yesterday and of course "no stock Sir" as they say here. I can get Mobil Delvac MX, 15-40, regular type, non synthetic. This is what I use in my Toyota Tamaraw FX, 2 liter diesel.

Or Mobil Delvac 1, 5-40, fully Synthetic at a price of Php 750 per liter (about $17.44), and Php 3,750 (about $87.20) for 5 liters.

I'm sure the Mobil Delvac 1, 5-40 would be fine, I can't see much diff. in the 5 or 15 rating in my case, it's never cold here, we run 80's to 90's Fahrenheit, 76 degrees is "COLD" here .

But that seems like a very high price for an oil, $17.44 per liter compared to the Php 180.00 ($4.18) for four stroke motorcycle oil. If the Mobil Delvac was twice the price I'd do it but at 4 times, OH WOW BABY!!!

I typically change my oil in the car and bikes every 3000 miles or about 4,800 Kilometers. With my usual riding that puts me at about every eight weeks to 10 weeks doing an oil change. And I should be riding even more.

On my limited and fixed income, I'm going to really have to justify the expense .

Do you guy's really think that the positive results can justify the expense?

Since I ride a lot of miles, and change my engine oil regularly, I have chosen to use the non-synthetic, diesel motor oil, with very good results.
I've been looking back through this thread and saw that quote from Spud, I'll have to check the price of the non-synthetic, for some reason I was thinking Spud and everyone else was using synthetic.

So it doesn't really matter if it's synthetic or not, just use diesel oil?

OH GOODY, more stuff to contemplate. or is it

The synthetic motor oil costing $17.44/liter is definitely not worth the extra expense. The motor oil you use in your Toyota should also do an excellent job for your RX3.

Yes, I recommend you use a reputable brand of 15W/40, commercial diesel oil. The Mobile Delvac MX, 15W/40 should do a good job for you.
