Glad everyone (and everything) is ok! I'm amazed that nothing got banged up on the Ural. A couple more feet either way and it could have flipped, or made it through the ditch and taken out the mailbox! Really happy to hear that the only casualty was your pride. Don't worry though, I hear it grows back super fast.

When I first saw the picture ,I thought you got run off the road .It was a relief to read you were not riding it down the road into the ditch .
If your ditch was not so wet ,would you of been able to ride it out or is it too underpowered or traction limited ? .
Finally ,how much time do you think you have spent waiting for your wife to show up ?i figure I have lost many thousands of hours wondering about my life/wife choices ,after I showed up on the early side every time and she is chronically late to everything .

That part of the ditch is where my sump pumps and all my French drains empty, so it's chronically damp. The rig was hung up on the left muffler and the receiver hitch was jammed into the dirt on the opposite of the ditch, so the pusher was not touching the ground. With the rig hung up that badly, the 2wd didn't do much, but throw a lot of mud.

I don't think I can count high enough for the time I've lost.

well....it coulda been worse. glad nothing bad happened. my first though seeing the pic was "the russian army treated those things worse than that, it should be fine".

I spent the better part of yesterday afternoon going through Arpok before I head up to Red Wing, MN a week from Friday. Engine oil and filter, trans oil & stinky final drive lube, plugs, recharge the K&N air filter(almost as big a pain in the ass as swapping the battery), adjust valves, readjust the front wheel bearings(Again. I may be looking into a new front hub soon), and scrubbed the ick off the engine.

FYI, it's been 10,000 miles since I've gone with the adapter to use a 'spin on' oil filter on the rig. Just put that out there because I was told by some 'experts' that the engine would seize within 20 miles if I did that. These were the same folks that said adding the receiver and a loaded bike rack would cause me to flip the rig. Still waiting for both to happen.

And no, it wasn't anyone on the CR crew.

Just so's ya know, this Yamaha petcock to tank gasket is a perfect replacement for the Ural petcock to tank gasket. Probably a lot cheaper, too.

I had my first “What fresh Ural hell is this?” in years on Thursday afternoon. We were just about home from cutting our wrists to buy the new trailer when one cylinder cut out. We limped the last mile home.
Long story short, the needle in the right carb stuck open, flooding the cylinder. When I set the petcock to prime with the engine off, the right cylinder filled with gas. That was fun. Pulled and cleaned the carb. Reinstalled and balanced. It’s all good now. I was due for an oil and filter change anyway, so I knocked that out yesterday while doing new front brakes pads on the Chevy.
I found out why the right caliper was hanging up on that POS. Now to figure out why the wipers go on when I start it. I miss my old F150.

I rebuilt the carbs today. Complete strip down with running the bodies through the ultra sonic. I replaced the fuel metering screws, gaskets, and the effin phillips head idle adjustment screws with Allen heads. Right there was part of the cause of many of my idle problems. Everything was balanced and running great, until the temps went up. CHT gauge wasn't showing abnormal heat, actually the head temps were pretty good for a hot day. Methinks I have a Hall Effect Sensor with a heat problem. If the old babushka starts and idles fine tomorrow morning when it's cool outside, I think that will prove it. Luckily, I have a few of those on the shelf.

Well, hell. It's not the hall effect sensor. It's not a bum CDI. It's not even a bad plug. It's looking like a top end rebuild.

Compression:

Left cylinder:60 psi. With a shot of oil in the cylinder:70 psi

Right cylinder:86 psi. With a shot of oil in the cylinder:86 psi

Should be at least 110.

I got some bad valves.
I have all the gaskets, save for valve seals. I guess I gotta start looking for parts.


This is closing the barn door after the horse has left, but no more parades.

This is gonna be spendy.

Top of the sidecar supports are disconnected so I can lean the bike to the left to remove the right head and cylinder.


Left side done. There are a total of 16 fasteners that need to be removed to get both heads and cylinders off.


Haven't gotten the right piston off yet. Kind of a tight fit.


Heads and cylinders on the bench.


Both exhaust valves are burned and the guides for the exhaust valves are shot. I'll check out the seats after I clean the ook out of the head tomorrow. The cylinders are usable but I'm going to price out a pair of new cylinders w/pistons and rings for grins.



So here's the parts list:
Two exhaust valves
Two intake valves
Four valve guides
Four valve seals
Rings for two pistons

If it won't break the bank
Two cylinders w/pistons and rings.

It's been 7 years and 20K miles with Russian quality, so I really can't complain. I can, but it won't do any good.

would the burning out of exhaust valves be a common issue considering they are like dogs balls / low hanging fruit on a horizontal cylinder....?

No. The exhaust valves are front and center in the air stream. Depending on outside temps, I usually see 325 to 375F head temps. This was a case of extended idling on a very hot day. I saw cylinder head temps approaching 450F. I'm lucky it's just a couple of valves and guides.
