Latest on the Honda: bike ran better. Sealant didn’t work. Evidently there is a case leak just behind the cylinder. I pulled the engine, and then decided to see if the CB125 (which is bored .25 over and looks like a fairly fresh set of rings) engine was usable. Spark plug hole needs helicoil so I ordered a cheap version off eBay. Also, the valve seats, especially the intake valve are very rusty (like horrible. Wouldn’t hold gas when I poured some into the intake). I pulled the valves out of it and will lap them both in this week (I got to use a 3$ garage sale valve spring compressor I had on my shop shelf for maybe 4 years, and it works like a charm! Woo hoo!). When the helicoil Kit gets here should be able to fix that issue then reinstall the head. That should restore compression. I’ll then put the 125 engine in the bike. Meanwhile, I’ll spend some time once the bike is back together pulling the left side case ‘again’ and seeing what’s up with the leak. I ordered a new case gasket too so that should help the process. Might just go ahead and buy a used cl100 left side too, since maybe the sl125 case is slightly different and causing me an issue? Anyway I really enjoyed my weekend taking apart engines and just mega tinkering with this old beast. Have a great week all!

A day off accomplished this: valve job and spark plug hole repair. CB125 engine is installed. It started right up and runs good! Might have some piston slap, but can’t tell. Will adjust timing chain and valves this weekend and see if that helps a noise I’m hearing. Dark and rainy so no test ride. Now, to unbolt the foot pegs from the CL100 engine, attach to the CB125 engine and ride it around the block tomorrow...

It could possibly be the timing chain slapping against the guide. I have had that before on a different Honda, and it can sound almost exactly like piston slap

Yeah, I static set the adjuster on the bench but will recheck tomorrow. Has a self adjuster, with a spring so should be ok but might have changed once it fired up for the first time in a long time. This is the bike that had a broke off spark plug, seized piston due to rust and very rusty valve seats. Got rings free, honed cylinder, lapped valves and put a helicoil into the head for spark plug. The piston is .25 over and I don’t think the bike had been run much before they shut her down and let rust take over. Might have done a bad job boring it out. Actually piston slap doesn’t really matter usually, but sounds kinda bad. I’ll verify and then use if that’s all it is.

THEN just for grins, I’ll tear down the original engine and fix the leak!

I have an old TW that made awful noise, despite adjusting the cam chain to spec. Turned out that the spring in the adjuster was shorter than it should be, from being in one position for so many years. I bought a new spring, adjusted the chain and the noise was considerably reduced.

Adjusted the tensioner with bike running per the book on the later model CB125’s. Seems to help. Bolted on the foot pegs and the seat. But it was dark and raining. Have tomorrow off tho so a test ride is eminent!

10 mile ride at 37 degrees. Cold! But the bike ran really well - buzzed up to 55/60 no issues, and no leaks, no stalling, nothing. Brought her back, changed the oil and cleaned the little screen. Took her for another short ride. Mission accomplished!

Put the other 2 engines on the bench and prepared for whatever teardown I’ll do on those. Cleaned shop.

Also, found that I can get a piston and ring set, from China, for the SL125 engine, with gaskets for about 12$. I think I’ll disassemble the SL, fix the kick start, put its original left case back on it with new gasket, do a valve job and then buy a Chinese piston kit. Can’t go wrong for 12$.

I think the original CL100 case, with its cracks and leaking drain plug area will just have to wait until I can get a left side case, and then I’ll reassemble that one too.

I heard the SL125 has a lower over all gear ratio so it might be fun to see what that is all about.

Re-read my complete thread. Stupid photobucket stole my photos. Irritating.

Well, Roketa to (KTM to Suzuki) to Honda thread is not necessarily over but at least has closure.

Here’s a video link that might work

I can't hear the audio, but the little bike sure turned out well. I'm glad you're able to spend more time hanging around this shop, Lance.

I love documenting what I’m doing and you guys are all very friendly. I don’t know why the audio doesn’t work... dang it. But needless to say it was going putt putt putt very nicely.

I took apart both of the parts engines today. I think I’ll relegate the CL100 to being a donor engine and get the SL125 engine back together, but use the cylinder, piston and head from the CL for now. The SL evidently had its kickstart shaft installed wrong, and the pawl was rubbing on the gears and wore slightly. The gears look fine as they are super hardened steel. The CL100 shaft is perfect and is also the larger diameter at the splines. I have a new gasket. I’ll do a valve job on the head, since I have the lapping compound and the spring compresser now. Also, I’m still toying with the idea of the 12$ Chinese piston rebuild kit just because I want to see if it’s any good... then, since the SL had a right side case opening for a tachometer I’ll use the CL right case and get it all back together. I should have one decent running spare engine for some project in the future. Pretty sure I have 2 SL/CB parts engines in Alaska too, at my moms... hmmm. Brother in law gave them to me several years ago. Maybe I’ll have to mail myself the extra extra parts for a 2nd extra engine this summer. . Haha wow. Can’t stand broken stuff in the garage tho... that’s it for now!

Put together the complete lower end of the SL125 using what pieces necessary from the CL100 to make it be in good shape. Then realized the wrist pin is a different size for the 100 compared to the 125 so ordered the 12$+4$ shipping Chinese piston, rings and gasket kit for this engine... engine on bench awaiting parts! Will probably do a valve job on the head while waiting.

Enjoyed the ride and really like the little booger.

Also, talked with my local Ace Hardware store. They can computer scan my tank, or a shock or another part that has the original blue, then mix me a can of spray paint for about 15$. I can then get the side covers looking very close to original. Won’t be that fancy 2 layer metallic but will be fine. Then maybe spray them with some clear coat and will be looking pretty good! Won’t touch the other parts that are original paint.

Also this is what my screen looks like when I go to make attachments, which are JPEGs.

Snowpocalypse is here! Well, the USA west coast version. No power for 30 hours, but my little dumpster find Honda generator kept one heater and some lights going and cell phones charged.

Powers on, snow is 10” deep.

No motorcycle updates except, working on getting the cylinder honed out on the SL125 extra engine.

Rode up to and around in the snow today! Of course, my pictures are still irritatingly limited to 19kb but here they are anyway!
